San Francisco is an expensive hotel city. Too expensive for many travelers to stay very long. Hotel loyalty points can soften the blow, but even with points you need a large balance to pay the high prices for free reward nights.
San Francisco is a city where low season dates November to March with low rates are often the better value than points reward nights.
Hopefully, you have deeper pockets than your own paying the hotel bill for your trip to San Francisco.
San Francisco Hotel Chain Rewards Map = 56 hotels
- Best Western = 2 hotels
- Choice Privileges = 9 hotels
- Club Carlson = 0 hotels (CC announced plans for a Quorvus in 2014, but apparently project did not go off)
- Hilton Honors = 5 hotels
- World of Hyatt = 3 hotels

- Starwood Preferred Guest = 8 hotels
- Wyndham Rewards = 13 hotels
My San Francisco hotel chain map includes 56 hotels with only 2 of those hotels located outside the city limits of San Francisco. Hampton Inn Daly City is close to BART train service into the city and Cavallo Point, Preferred Hotels Group is north of Golden Gate Bridge as a convenient location just outside the city.Â
I did not include San Francisco Airport hotels on this map. That is quite a different suburban location and experience from urban San Francisco city. I will create a separate map for SFO airport chain hotels.
East End Hotels and West End Neighborhoods
One of the issues with San Francisco is virtually all chain hotels are concentrated within a relatively small section of downtown around Union Square, Moscone Convention Center and the Embarcadero piers from the Bay Bridge to Fisherman’s Wharf.
Ocean Beach, Golden Gate Park, the Castro are areas of the city miles away from all the major chain hotels. Among the 56 chain hotels on my map, only a Rodeway Inn is located on the west side of the city.
Public transportation can take an hour or more on the bus to reach Golden Gate Park and Ocean Beach from Union Square on the east side of the city. Parking your own car at a major San Francisco Hotel can be a $60 per night expense. It is no wonder Uber started in San Francisco.
San Francisco hotels were frequent stays and hotel reviews in the early years of Loyalty Traveler when many of the high-end properties during the financial recession of 2009-2011 were priced under $100 per night. Hard to imagine a hotel like Sheraton Fisherman’s Wharf will ever be priced at $49 per night again or Westin St. Francis for $99 or SPG running another promotion for one free night every two stays. Those free night promotions put me in the St. Regis San Francisco and W San Francisco for several nights.
Hyatt Hotels were another frequent stay partner of mine during those years. Reviews of all the SPG and Hyatt hotels can be found on Loyalty Traveler with a search.
I have not stayed in a San Francisco hotel for several years now. At least I have the option of doing San Francisco as a day trip from my home in Monterey. My favorite part of the city is Golden Gate Park, miles away from the major chain hotels located on the other side of the city.Â
