UNWTO, United Nations World Tourism Organization, held a news conference last week in Madrid to report global travel increased 7% in 2017 to 1.322 billion international arrivals. This was the strongest global tourism performance in 7 years.
Europe up 8% in 2017 to 671 million international arrivals.
- Southern Europe and Mediterranean region up 13% and largest tourism growth.
- Western Europe up 7%.
- Northern Europe up 5%.
- Central and Eastern Europe up 5%.
Africa up 8% in 2017 with 62 million international arrivals.
- North Africa up 13%.
- Sub-Saharan Africa up 5%.
Asia Pacific up 6% in 2017 with 324 million international arrivals.
- South Asia up 10%.
- Southeast Asia up 8%.
- Oceania up 7%.
- Northeast Asia up 3%.
Middle East up 5% in 2017 with 58 million international arrivals.
Americas up 3% in 2017 with 207 million international arrivals.
- South America up 7%.
- Central America up 4%.
- Caribbean up 4%.
- North American up 2%.
- Canada and Mexico saw tourism growth in 2017.
- USA international tourist arrivals dropped in 2017.
2018 is expected to see global tourism growth of 4% to 5%.
USA 2018 Tourism?
The US Dollar dropped 15% to 25% in value against most European currencies over the past 12 months making USA a cheaper tourism destination for 2018 for Europeans.
