Seattle to Munich is $371 with Icelandair for travel Jan-March 2018 and Frankfurt is $435 round trip. These are Icelandair’s new Economy Light fares with only a 10kg carryon baggage allowance.
Icelandair ticket prices jump to $485 for Munich and $549 for Frankfurt to buy Economy Standard with an additional 23kg checked bag allowance.
Air Canada Seattle to Munich is $405 round trip, United $412 and Delta $484 with much great frequency during this same winter period and their standard fares include one free checked bag and carryon.
Seattle to Frankfurt is $519 on United, $527 on Delta and $549 for comparable Icelandair Economy Standard.
Will major airlines continue to undercut Icelandair Economy Standard ticket prices?
Over the past year, some of the best fare deals to Europe were Icelandair tickets with free checked bag and seat assignment and the major airlines generally were slightly higher. There were consistently deals to Europe from the major alliance airlines in Oneworld, Skyteam and Star Alliance in line with Icelandair economy ticket prices. These deals were frequent from Icelandair US airports Seattle, Denver, Minneapolis, Chicago, New York, Boston and Washington D.C. Icelandair also flies to Portland, Orlando, Philadelphia, Dallas and Tampa Bay.
Now it looks like the majors have the competitive edge as long as they continue to undercut the price of Icelandair Economy Standard fares from these USA airports.
