Over the past year I have taken a couple of Bratislava Free Walking Tours for Old Town and the Castle. In part one of my July Bratislava trip report photo essay, I covered parts of Bratislava with a photo essay of a walk from Radisson Blu Carlton Bratislava to the castle and crossing the Danube River to drink beer on the other side.
Walk to Bratislava Castle Slovakia photo essay (Aug 3, 2017).
This post reveals Bratislava Old Town, relatively small, yet gorgeous.
Church of St. Elizabeth, commonly called The Blue Church (1909-1913), constructed in Hungarian Art Nouveau style.
The Blue Church is part of the Free Walking Tour, however, we passed Blue Church on our walk to find BeAbout Burgers, #2 rated of 1,020 Bratislava restaurants on TripAdvisor. We ate there twice. Burgers were good and BeAbout had the cheapest strong beer (14 at 1.69 EUR/0.5l) we found in the city. Standard beer in pubs is labeled 11 or 12; 5% ABV is equivalent to 12.
BeAbout mushroom burger meal 8 EUR.
Šafárikovo námestie (namestie means square)
Pre-WWI architecture around Šafárikovo námestie are some of the most beuatiful buildings in the city.
This square reminded me of Riga, Latvia and the large number of Art Nouveau buildings one sees there.
Eurovea shopping center is the site of Sheraton Bratislava.
With the temperature pushing 35C/95F, even the air conditioned shopping mall was not cool enough with the large skylight ceiling heating up the interior.
Eurovea is beside the Danube River with plenty of riverfront pub cafes outside the shopping mall. We wanted to drink on a party boat like ones we drank on in Prague, however, most of the boats on the Old Town side of the river are botels, boat-hotels. The other side of the Danube from Old Town has most of the party boats, including a brewery boat.
We ended up in a small burger pub at the Danube Stary most bridge with an outdoor patio beneath shade trees for a cooler setting than the less shaded riverbank.

Hlavné námestie
Tourist booths on Old Town Hlavné námestie offer clothing, souvenirs, and crafts. I think larger retail shops in Old Town offered similar items at lower prices.
Napoleon’s armies invaded the Austrian Empire in 1805 with a major defeat of Austrian and Russian forces at the Battle of Austerlitz (near Brno, CZ) on December 2, 1805. Austria was compelled to surrender with the signing of the Treaty of Pressburg Dec 26, 1805. Bratislava is the city formerly known as Pressburg.
The Treaty of Pressburg in 1805 is arguably the catalyst shifting Central European power from Austria to Prussia and the unification of Germany over the next century.
Old Town Bratislava is loaded with pubs and restaurants and tourist shops.
