IHG Points+Cash 20% discount rate to May 31, $92=20K points

Running with Miles and Frequent Miler posted a great deal today for buying cheap IHG Rewards Club points through a Points + Cash 20% discount offer for stays through May 31, 2017.

This may be a targeted offer for IHG MasterCard members, however, Running with Miles saw the offer without being a IHG Rewards Club card-carrying Platinum member. The deal here is many IHG hotels in the higher reward categories allow the purchase of up to 20,000 points on a Points + Cash reward night.

Promotion Update: The message I have seen when checking Points & Cash rates is 20% discount offer is targeted to IHG Rewards Club Platinum members, which includes IHG Rewards Club MasterCard members.

IHG HI Mayfair P C

$100 for 20,000 points = $5.00 per 1,000 points purchase price. Cancel the Points + Cash reward stay and the points purchased are immediately re-deposited into your account, along with the points redeemed from your account for the reward stay reservation.

To play this deal, you need to already have some points to work with and redeem for Points + Cash reward nights.

Even better, there are some hotels in the USA with lower Points + Cash reward amounts.

Hotel Indigo Chicago Gold Coast

    • 35,000 points
    • 30,000 points + $30.00   $24.00
    • 25,000 points + $60.00   $48.00
    • 20,000 points + $89.00   $71.20
    • 15,000 points + $115.00 $92.00
    • All Cash portions to buy points are discounted
      20%.

Hotel Indigo Chicago Goldcoast

For Hotel Indigo Chicago, the price to buy 20,000 points with a Points + Cash reward night is $92.00.

IHG Hotel Indigo P C

30,000 points + $184 (buys 40,000 points) for 2-night Points + Cash reward stay at Hotel Indigo Chicago Gold Coast. Cancel the reward reservation and all 70,000 points go back to account balance. Effectively you buy 40,000 points for $184, which is a purchase rate of $4.60 per 1,000 points. That is a great deal.

This brings the cost of a 5,000 points Point Breaks reward night down to $23/night when purchasing a Points + Cash reward stay, then canceling the reservation.

  1. Is there any downside to this? What I mean is, have you ever read any reports of travelers getting burned by doing this? I haven’t.

  2. @Joseph N. – like many things, moderation is key.

Reports I have read about people having their hotel rewards accounts closed generally involved playing games with earning bonuses on multiple member accounts.

  3. I’ve tried it today. But it doesn’t offer the 20% discount. At least it didn’t for me. I’m a club member only.

  4. @Laureano – In subsequent IHG searches since this post I saw a message that the 20% discount is targeted to IHG Rewards Club Platinum members.

  5. I actually love your post. I read your site fairly frequently and you’re always coming out with some amazing items.
I discussed this on my FB and my followers merely
loved it. Keep up the great work!
