Eastern Africa is on sale today. $847 is the lowest fare I recall in the past year departing from California to fly to JRO, Mt. Kilimanjaro Airport in Tanzania. Flights to eastern Africa are on sale primarily with Star Alliance. There are good fares with Skyteam airlines and Qatar too. Most of these deals are for January to end of April departures.
Virgin Atlantic also has low fares to many places in southern Africa today with LAX-Johannesburg as low as $748 round trip.
My rule of thumb, after the past year studying global airfares, is a fare under $1,000 to fly California to sub-Saharan Africa round trip in economy class is a low fare. United Airlines, Star Alliance, Delta-Skyteam and Virgin Atlantic have relatively low fares to more than a dozen airports around Africa. Many of these airports are outside the main international airports of Nairobi NBO and Johannesburg JNB for these regions in Africa.
Google Flights shows six airports in Eastern Africa in four countries priced at $824 to $913 round trip departing from Los Angeles in Jan 2016.
- NBO Nairobi, Kenya $756 Qatar Air.
- KGL Kigali, Rwanda $900 Air Canada.
- EBB Entebbe, Uganda $848 United flying UA, Brussels Air, Kenya Air and Swiss. Delta/KLM have similar fare.
- MBA Mombasa, Kenya $838 Lufthansa.
Low fares are available for departures through April 2016 to most of these airports in eastern Africa.
Star Alliance to Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania
United Airlines flies to Frankfurt FRA and United codeshare flights with Ethiopian Airlines take you to Addis Ababa ADD, Ethiopia and a flight connection to JRO Airport. The return is Kenya Airways via a short-hop to Nairobi NBO Kenya. Swiss flies you from NBO back to Los Angeles via Zurich. The airports themselves sound like their own travel adventure for a tourist passing through three African countries.

Virgin Atlantic also has a very good sale on routes to South Africa, Namibia and Botswana today. Johannesburg is as low as $748 round trip from LAX and SFO. Many of the other low-priced airports in southern Africa require a phone call to Virgin Atlantic to book South Africa Airways connections.
