South Africa economy class fares were low a couple a days ago and today even lower with LAX and SFO to Cape Town and Durban as low as $815 round trip on Virgin Atlantic and Qatar Airways.
I mentioned low Virgin Atlantic fares in my post on Star Alliance to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania two days ago.

The difference today is Qatar Airways (Oneworld Alliance) also has low fares similar to Virgin Atlantic to major airports in South Africa. Virgin has lowest fare at $748 round trip to Johannesburg. Delta is $799 and Qatar $811. Qatar matches Virgin’s fares at $815 to Cape Town and Durban.
This is one of the best sales for California to South Africa flights in the past year. Fares have only been this low for a few days in the past year to Jo’burg and Cape Town.
Google Flights shows many of the more remote airports in South Africa and places like Botswana and Namibia with airfare in the $800 to $900 flying Virgin Atlantic and connecting to South Africa Airways. These flights require phone booking with Virgin Atlantic.

Qatar Economy O class earns 25% flight miles and 50% EQM in American Airlines AAdvantage.
Competition is heating up for California to South Africa routes. Star Alliance member Ethiopian Airlines had LAX-DUR route on sale for $867 round trip last month.
