New DoubleTree by Hilton Hotels around the globe

DoubleTree Hotels are Hilton’s upscale brand acquired in 1999. There are currently more than 250 DoubleTree Hotels around the globe with most located in the U.S. The hotel brand’s best known feature is the chocolate chip cookie guests receive at check-in.

In my experience DoubleTree Hotels are more variable in property standards than other Hilton brands with many of the hotels being older propeties from the 1970s and 80s. Hilton recognized this shortcoming of the brand and 2011 has seen a global campaign to upgrade the customer image for DoubleTree Hotels.

Hilton unveiled a redesigned DoubleTree logo in October 2010 and officially renamed the brand DoubleTree by Hilton.

The global penetration of the DoubleTree by Hilton brand is apparent in the newly opened hotels and future openings comprising the greatest hotel pipeline in the brand’s history. The first DoubleTree Hotels in Romania and India opened this year. A DoubleTree by Hilton was even recently announced for Erbil, Iraq in 2013.

    There’s no way that I’d classify DoubleTree as “upscale”. Your comment on most of them being dated is bang on – I have never been in a DoubleTree without thinking that I had gone through a time warp.

    @Biggles209 – DoubleTree categorized as Upscale is really a low ranking in my opinion for its STR U.S. chain scale placement. Other upscale hotel brands are Courtyard, Crowne Plaza, Four Points, and Hyatt Place.

    Crowne Plaza has the same issue of too many older properties holding down the overall brand.

    In many locations the DoubleTree and Crowne Plaza are in the same competitive set as Upper Upscale hotel brands like Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, Sheraton and Westin.

    @Jeff – No idea what or when Hilton plans for Q4-2011. The past two years are little indicator for 2011-12 with a much better business climate tending to push promotions toward spend based offers (2x and 3x points) rather than bonus points for stays.

    How many of those “new” properties are actually rebrands (downgrades?) such as the Doubletree By Hilton Luxembourg, which was a Hilton (by Hilton, I suppose) until earlier this summer. When I was there in early July, it was partially rebranded (the big sign on top of the building still said “Hilton” and so did all the traffic signs across town).

    @Oliver – No idea how many hotels are rebrands. Likely some hotels were rebranded from other hotel chains.

    These are just a list of the new hotels to DoubleTree this year and coming hotels. I didn’t research individual properties.

    DoubleTree Bahia Mar Fort Lauderdale was a rebrand from an existing independent hotel property.

    Do you have any insights into what would cause a property such as the one in Luxembourg to rebrand from one Hilton brand to another? Can’t be exactly cheap. Would it be because of them not meeting (new) brand standards, thus forcing a lower brand (or worse, leaving the HHonors family altogether)? Certainly, the name “Hilton” is better known in Europe than “Doubletree” (even with the new add-on “by Hilton”).

    @Oliver – No real insight to the workings of hotel branding. The Hilton Monterey at the bottom of the hill from my home rebranded as the Hilton Garden Inn Monterey a few years ago.

    I repeatedly saw comments from guests claiming the hotel was not up to Hilton standards. Now it is one of the totally not your typical Hilton Garden Inn design since it is a hotel from the 1970s.
