ChoiceVacationRentals.com, the vacation rental arm of Choice Hotels, has a promotion for 10,000 bonus points when you make a booking by December 31, 2018 for 3 nights or more and stay by February 28, 2019. Choice Privileges members normally earn 5 points per $1 for the vacation rental daily rate + cleaning fee.

Use promotion code EARN10K when making your vacation rental booking.

Choice Vacation Rentals includes over 30,000 private residences and resort-style lodging in 35 U.S. vacation destinations.

Hawaii Vacation

There are thousands of rentals for Hawaii. My primary interest is determining the mark-up fees compared to the base rental rate shown for the total rental price.

Sands of Kahana #316 is listed as $285 per night for a 7-night rental rate = $2,137.00.

Cleaning fee is 16.28% at $348.00 and this amount, along with rental rate, earns Choice Privileges points on $2,485 of total cost. Hawaii state tax is 15.16%.

$2,485 x 5 points/$1 = 12,425 Choice Privileges points.

Add 10,000 bonus points to this amount for 22,425 points on $2,809 vacation rental booking.

The cost to buy Choice Privileges points through Points Plus Cash reward rates is $7.50 per 1,000 points.

22,425 points gives a rebate value around $168 when valuing Choice Privileges points at $7.50 per 1,000 points.

I regularly get $15 to $20 per 1,000 points with my Choice Privileges points. So far in 2018, my redemption rate is $18.70 per 1,000 points after 17 reward nights using Choice Privileges points.

Some states have far lower cleaning fee and tax rates.

Vail Spruce Way House is $478 per night in February 2019.

Cleaning fee = 9.62% and state tax = 10% for a significantly lower add-on to the nightly rental rate at 19.62% compared to 31.44% add-on fees in Maui.

Keep that differential in mind when searching for a vacation in different parts of the USA.

Bottom Line on Choice Vacation Rentals

There are many vacation rental companies offering properties in many places. For my travels my primary motivation for hotel rooms I book through hotel loyalty programs is getting a points rebate on my vacation lodging spend.

I think these vacation rentals are an option to check out if you are in the market for this type of vacation rental, but compare prices and don’t overpay just to earn points. At the same time, factor in the cost of the rebate in Choice Privileges points for a Choice Vacation Rentals booking. You might find a rental option through Choice Vacation Rentals with a Choice Privileges points rebate that is not any more costly than other vacation rental booking options.

How would this compare to using hotels.com for Welcome Rewards (one free night for every ten nights) + cash back from a site like topcashback.com? That is assuming some of these Choice properties are on hotels.com

Those would be good comparisons for another article. I don’t think about hotels.com very often.

This past week I made my two hotel bookings at independent hotels not affiliated with a major hotel loyalty program. Last time I did that was Sep 2016 for a wonderful suite in Kosice, Slovakia.

I had two chain hotels booked with points, then decided to downgrade my room to cheap paid rates and save my points for places where a chain hotel will be my best deal.

Expensive vacation rentals might be a good rebate deal through Hotels.com, since hotels.com averages the room rate for 10 hotel nights for the free night credit value.
