Park Plaza Amsterdam Vondelpark 66 stairs to room 36

Park Plaza Vondelpark is a location in Amsterdam I enjoy staying. This past week I stayed there 4 nights and earned 30,000 bonus points with Club Carlson’s current promotion for 50,000 points after 8 nights. A couple years ago we stayed at the hotel for three nights when there was another Club Carlson promotion for 30,000 points with a 3-night stay.

Last month I stayed 2 nights at Park Inn Prague and 2 nights at Radisson Blu Wroclaw, Poland for around $41 per night on 2-for-1 Gold elite member reservations. I earned 20,000 bonus points from those four nights at a cost of $164.

January 30, the day I checked out of Radisson Blu Wroclaw, was the same day Club Carlson terminated their 2-for-1 and 4-for-2 Gold elite weekend discount rate without any advance notice. That elite member rate for EMEA region hotels saved me thousands of dollars in hotel spend over the past few years.

Park Plaza Vondelpark is the last reservation I made on a 2-for-1 rate. My 2-for-1 weekend booking cost $58 per night. I then booked two more weekday nights for $92/night at Park Plaza Vondelpark during a special 30% off discount rate promotion in mid-January for prepaid bookings.

My 4 nights at Park Plaza Vondelpark cost $75 per night. $300 in hotel spend earned 30,000 bonus points for a total 50,000 bonus points with 8 nights stayed during Club Carlson’s ‘Earn Bigger Rewards’ promotion.

Loyalty Traveler – Club Carlson 5,000 to 100,000 bonus points for 1 to 20 nights Jan 9-Mar 31 works for my travel plans (Jan 9, 2017).

66 Stairs to Room 36

At check-in the receptionist said I had requested a balcony room. I did not remember making that request. There was a room with a balcony available, but with a caveat. Part of the Park Plaza Vondelpark hotel is an adjacent building to the main building where reception desk is located. The elevator in the adjacent building was out of order and would not be repaired during our stay. We would have to walk three flights of stairs for the 3rd floor room with balcony. That was a compromise we were willing to make.

I am a compulsive stair counter. The first floor has 20 stairs, the second floor 24 stairs and the third floor 22 stairs for 66 stairs to room 36.

The only really tough part was carrying the luggage up on arrival and down for departure.

Park Plaza building

Room 36 is 3rd floor corner room with awning and two balconies. We were surprised the awning survived Storm Doris with its high wind gusts.

Park Plaza King

After two nights at Holiday Inn London Kensington in a so-called UK king size bed measuring 54 inches wide, this Executive King bed was truly enormous at 76 inches wide. I stretched my arm out at night and barely reached Kelley across the bed.

The plastic chair at the desk was less comfortable than I need for working in a hotel room. One of the bed pillows became my seat butt cushion. Another drawback to the room was no eating space for two. We relocated the table by the door holding the coffee maker and placed it between the two chairs.

My major complaint is the hotel wifi was so slow that I could barely work.

Valeriusplein #2 tram stop about 150 meters from hotel is closest tram stop.

Museumplein with Van Gogh Museum is about 20 minutes walk, where a major Albert Heijn supermarket is also located.

Park Plaza bathroom

The room had high ceilings and nice views from bed.

Park Plaza window

The placement of the TV on the wall immediately next to the curtains meant part of the screen was blocked by the curtains when viewed from the chairs, desk and left side of the bed.

We did not have breakfast at the hotel and never really used any facilities in main building until I needed to print out boarding passes and tickets on the business center computer adjacent to the reception desk on the morning of our departure.

Amsterdam is an expensive hotel city. Staying at Park Plaza Vondelpark for $75 per night, while earning about 35,000 Club Carlson points for $300 in hotel spend is a fantastic rebate.

Poor wifi is the main complaint I have about the hotel stay.

Heineken

66 steps to room 36 was good exercise to work off all those cheap Heineken beers we drank in Amsterdam.

This hotel is in a great neighborhood, adjacent to the wonderful Vondelpark. Looking at photos on TripAdvisor, though, it looks like the rooms have frosted glass walls separating the bathroom from the bedroom. Is this true? If so, I wonder about privacy issues. Any thoughts?
