Andaz Amsterdam Suite Upgrade on Hyatt Points + Cash rate

Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht is a Hyatt Gold Passport category 6 hotel for 25,000 points per night. Booking the Points + Cash rate allowed me to use a Diamond Suite upgrade from last year that was going to expire March 1 without a 2016 booking. The Points + Cash rate was 12,500 points + $150.

While paying 12,500 points + $150 might be a significant discount on the 904 EUR ($1,017 USD) published room rate for the Andaz suite and even a discount on the 401 EUR ($453 USD) entry category room rate, this Andaz hotel stay ranks in the top 5 for most expensive hotels I ever booked.

One feature of the Andaz Amsterdam King Suite is a selection of books on the shelves in the room. This is a tribute to the building’s former life as a public library prior to the conversion into the Andaz a couple years ago.

Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht is in one of the most desirable tourist locations for Amsterdam on the canal ring. Our suite did not face the canal and the window view was a side view overlooking other residences.

Photo in the Andaz Suite picture looks like it is same suite we stayed in.

The TV in living room is wall mounted on partial partition between bedroom and living room. There are sliding doors on both sides of the partition.

One of the first things I did to rearrange the room was slide the table with the ceramic lamp to block the passageway. I bumped into the low standing table twice and I was afraid I would knock the lamp over onto the hardwood floor. I don’t even want to think about the replacement cost.

We blocked the passage on one side of the partition to the bedroom with the table.

My primary memory from the desk is finding out that I while I was flying to Amsterdam, someone was staying in New York on my dime points after phone hacking their way to three nights using 185,000 of my hotel loyalty points in Club Carlson and IHG Rewards Club.

A cool feature of the entry way is a closet that also has a closet door in the bathroom that opens to the same space.

The fish décor is standard in the rooms I have stayed at in Andaz Amsterdam. Honestly, I don’t like the imagery at all. And I am a lover of seafood cuisine.

There was a direct view from a rooftop deck across the alley into the bedroom. We kept the curtains closed most of the time.

The bathroom was one of the nicest features of the Andaz Suite. The standard room we stayed in last year at this hotel had an open room bathroom sink. I preferred the separate bathroom in the suite.

This was our Andaz Amsterdam room in 2015 with a sink, counter and shower in an open space layout in the main room. The open door in the photo is the toilet and separate from the sink in the middle of the room.

Snacks and nonalcoholic beverages in mini-bar are complimentary. There are no ice machines, but room service quickly brought us a full ice bucket at no charge.

  

There was some space to add our personal food items in the refrigerator.

The fitness center is in the basement level through the Andaz Spa.

I went to the fitness center a couple of times, but never saw anyone at the front desk for the spa. The fitness center was small with about four pieces of equipment including stair stepper and treadmills and weights. One nice feature of the fitness center was a refrigerator with cold still and sparkling water. There was a bowl of fruit in the spa entrance.

As a Hyatt Gold Passport Diamond member we had complimentary breakfast at BlueSpoon Restaurant. We both ordered off the menu rather than take the buffet.

Bluespoon Restaurant in Andaz Amsterdam is where the breakfast buffet is served. The Bluespoon bar off the reception desk in the lobby is a popular place.

There was a wine happy hour when we arrived, but neither of us wanted any alcohol after the overnight flight from USA.

Andaz reception desk is simply a couple of tables in the open lobby space.

Riding in the glass wall elevator is visually entertaining.

We love the location of Andaz Amsterdam on the Prinsengracht and the short walk to the entertainment area around Leidseplein, but similar to Radisson Blu Amsterdam, the sky high room rates will likely keep us from staying here much in the future. We enjoy the InterContinental Amstel for its old world historic hotel charm and my new go to budget hotel is the Ramada Apollo Amsterdam Centre as long as it is available for 3,000 Wyndham Rewards points and 54.50 EUR.
