Toronto to Europe under $500 airports and AA Paris $520 USD fares fall travel

Toronto YYZ offers an opportunity to travel to Europe at prices hundreds of dollars less than direct flights from the USA for travel from September to December. I think of this as a strategy more applicable for September travel, since there will be more sales for US departures over the next six weeks.

Getting to Toronto can be as simple as a low cost Avios points award ticket. For example, travel from New York to Toronto on American Airlines is only 9,000 points round trip.

An award ticket to Canada is far less than the award cost for flying to Europe. Those miles earned on revenue tickets for Toronto departures also earn miles, elite qualification credit and may even be eligible for an elite member upgrade to business class.

The low price of tickets from YYZ makes revenue tickets a good value in place of redeeming points for award travel from the USA.

Main point is to think about departures from Canada when you are faced with high prices to the European destination you desire. Canada is not always significantly cheaper than the USA, but there are times like today when you should look north for bargain prices to Europe from Toronto and Vancouver.

    I booked YYZ-HEL for next February at C$620 (it was as low as C$580 depending upon the days of travel and length of stay) on AA ticket stock, AA codeshare on BA metal outbound, AY/AA via JFK return. These fares book into O-class on OneWorld partners and at the moment earn 100% mileage in AAdvantage. However, there is a possibility O fares will drop down to 50% mileage in the new year unless booked with AA flight numbers.
    Note also that on STAR metal flights, mileage earned will not be 100% unless one flies UA metal, and even then in some programs may earn less than that, 50% or possibly no miles, RDMs or EQMs. So be careful if you intend to use these fares to earn status or redeemable miles.
    Still really good fares particularly as the C$ has dropped almost 25% against the US$.

    That is some advance planning for next February. If I was in Toronto, I might turn into a winter Nordic mileage runner. Great fares this week to Europe, even from California.

    I have too much to think about over next three months to think about 2016 travel yet. Have Radisson reservations in Amsterdam and Stockholm so far for 2016. Simply need to find good deal flights..

    Living up here one does get used to such likelihoods as weather IROPS. Same would go at the other end of my trip too, not to mention any JFK transfers given last winter’s record along the east coast (we missed most of it in Toronto BTW). I’ll be [hopefully] flying on to SYD on an award from HEL two days after arriving, so I have provided some weather padding. One gets used to seizing the moment with fares in prepping for a mid-winter break in warmer climes. Last January and February it was UA’s crazy C$675 YYZ-SIN fare several of us booked the previous fall when they showed up. Just always book your tickets with a credit card that has flight delay insurance! (BTW looks like most of these fares on STAR and OW airlines are now gone. Pricing is now in the C$900 range, which would be about U$700. Even heard a commentator on MSNBC the other morning mention he was flying to HEL for a conference on a U$500 fare from YYZ, much cheaper than his home airport in upper NY state….not sure how he was getting to/from YYZ. Most of us have had to get out cheap fares ex-BUF, so it’s been a weird year for fares up here…including AA’s C$450 YYZ-HKG fare and its C$375 YYZ-GIG one…which I am using next weekend, already upgraded with a pair of eVIPs!)

    Once I have American Airlines Executive Platinum status after next month’s trips to Denmark and Norway, I might be finding myself in Toronto or Vancouver for some low American Airlines fares.
