Hotel Loyalty 2012-Q2 promotions Wyndham Hotels Wyndham Rewards

Buy Wyndham Rewards points today 4/23

I redeemed Wyndham Rewards points I bought at 2011 Daily Getaways last week for the conference I am attending in L.A.

Sure, I would rather be at the Westin Bonaventure or JW Marriott LA for the U.S. Travel Association International PowWow 2012 conference, but my hotel stay only cost me $227 for four nights in hotels using Wyndham Rewards points I bought last year rather than the $1,000+ needed for the negotiated conference hotel rates.

And Wyndham Rewards points can also be transferred into airline frequent flyer miles. Wyndham Rewards has the best hotel points to airline miles exchange rate of any hotel loyalty program (1,000 points = 400 miles), unless you have six figure balances to exchange Marriott Rewards or Club Carlson points at slightly better rates.

Two times in the past year I used Wyndham Rewards points on road trips to book a Wyndham brand hotel while sitting in the lobby of the hotel and then walked over to the desk and picked up my room key.

My point being that Wyndham Rewards points are easy to redeem. With over 7,000 hotels globally, mostly in the USA, there is usually a Wyndham brand property around wherever you go in the 50 states and many other places. There are so many Wyndham hotel brands (14).

The page says “1 Night at Super 8 for $55”, but you are buying 16,000 Wyndham Rewards points that can be used for hotel stays at any Wyndham brand or redeemed for airline miles and other things through Wyndham Rewards.

Haha I clicked buy now at 12:01 and the page was loading forever what a scam.

What I found by poking around a little bit more is that the point requirement for international hotels is very high for e.g. the cayman islands ramada requires 45000 points for a night.

Thanks. Tried them all, only got in on the 2 Ramada (32k for like $99). After purchasing though seems like only a ok discount for the first few trial-bookings I did. Any tips for maximizing the value of these points?

  • Jon April 23, 2012

Nathan – lots of people like transferring Wyndham points to airlines. You can also redeem for gift cards, or for Wyndham hotels. Check thepointsguy.com for some example uses.

  • Nathan April 23, 2012

@Jon – Ok just noticed they can transfer to Airline points (including qualifying points for Southwest companion pass) this now seems like a much better deal options-wise. Thanks!

Managed to grab the 48K and 50K(presale) packages. Happy!

  • Marc April 23, 2012

Wyndham is the best hotel loyalty program to transfer to airline miles? You mean other than SPG, right? 😉

  • Bacc April 23, 2012

What was the trick for winning? I was on the presale at 12 precisely and the full sale at 1 precisely, 3 of us on separate computers with with the offers loaded. Got the it’s in someone else’s basket message on all. Constant retries til sold out appeared. What is the trick?

  • Jerry April 23, 2012

@Marc I think Wyndham is the best for transferring to airline miles. For SPG although you get 25K miles for transferring 20K SPG points, it is much, much harder to earn SPG points than Wyndham points. Besides SPG properties are pricey.

The purpose of the web site http://www.ustravel.org is to encourage travel to the USA by foreign tourists? I was on it today trying to grab a Wyndham points package. I was lucky enough to get one but when I went to pay for it, it wouldn’t accept my Canadian address for the credit card. It only accepts US states! I just assumed that business is sooo good they didn’t need any visitors from abroad wanting to spend money…

  • Marc April 23, 2012

@Jerry – Ric specifically mentioned exchange rate, which SPG wins hands down.

  • Ric Garrido April 24, 2012

@narayana – I think 45,000 points is the highest reward level for Wyndham Rewards and that is only in a select few locations. Where I find great value with Wyndham Rewards points is for the other Wyndham brands in teh US where the highest rate is 16,000 points per night. I think it is easy to get $100 to $150 in value at many Wyndham brand hotels where the room rate is high and 16,000 points only cost about $50 to buy with Daily Getaways. Most of my redemptions are Ramada properties with rates over $100 per night.

@Marc – Wyndham Rewards has a better exchange rate than SPG for airline miles transfers when comparing the base rate points are earned relative to spend at hotels.

SPG is a better exchange rate for top elites using the Amex credit card for hotel spend.

Wyndham Rewards does not have elite status and starts to fall behind Marriott, Club Carlson and SPG for top elite members.

Here is a post on hotel points-to-miles exchange rates for major hotel loyalty programs and United Airlines. The post has links to the rate of exchange for other airlines.

Wyndham Rewards points have the best points-to-miles exchange rate based on the rate points are earned for hotel stays for a person with no elite status and no hotel points credit card.

  • Ric Garrido April 24, 2012

Congratulations to everyone who were able to Wyndham Rewards points. I was in meetings and logged into both sales about 3 minutes after the start and I did not get any points this year.

  • Ric Garrido April 24, 2012

@Marc – Think of the exchange rate this way. Assume SPG points were on sale for $15 per 1,000 points rather than the regular rate of $35/1,000 points.

    20,000 SPG points = $300.

$300 = 25,000 airline miles for most SPG partners.

Wyndham Rewards points at the highest Daily Getaways price were $3.44/1,000 points.

    $300 = 87,000 Wyndham Rewards points = 34,800 frequent flyer miles.

Now back to reality – SPG sells points for $35 per 1,000 and not $15 per 1,000 points.

Wyndham Rewards points were available for $3.44 per 1,000 points or less.

Wyndham Rewards points are a great points-to-miles transfer rate compared to other programs. Only when you tie in credit card, elite bonus points and good promotions do other programs offer better points-to-miles exchange opportunities.

Sorry Ric… but you’re using Daily Getaway purchase rates for comparison, which 99% of us couldn’t get in on. And most of us do have the credit cards.. so reality is actually pretty different from your scenario. Daily Getaway was great for those who got it tho.
