Review: Memmo Príncipe Real Lisbon, Design Hotel in Marriott Bonvoy

a pool with a view of a city

Memmo Príncipe Real Lisbon, a member of Design Hotels and a Marriott Bonvoy hotel was our favorite stay during 11 nights in Lisbon, Portugal. A hillside location offering panoramic views across the cityscape of central Lisbon in a boutique high end hotel set in a vibrant, centrally located downtown neighborhood is an ideal retreat for tourists.

The Príncipe Real neighborhood is an appealing area of the city we enjoyed walking around and hanging out in green spaces with dining at a choice of good restaurants, bakeries, gelato shops and inexpensive take away pizza nearby. Local markets within five minutes walk offered beer, water and fruit supplies. And there was even an outdoor beer garden on a public space city terrace park was happening a couple hundred meters from the hotel.

Booking Memmo Principe Real Lisbon

This is a popular hotel with only 44 rooms that I booked in November 2021 as a Marriott Bonvoy category 5 hotel for 35,000 points per night for our June 2022 stay. I never saw availability again for a late June or early July stay using Marriott points. Room rates were 270 EUR per night when I booked in November.

At the time of writing, rates for August to October 2022 tend to be 300 to 400 EUR per night. Rates drop to 224 EUR per night in November. There are very few dates remaining with rooms for points in August and September 2022. October has about 1/3 dates at 35,000 to 40,000 points. November has about half of dates showing rooms and December most dates at 34,000 points. Rates drop to 30,000 points per night with wide-open availability in January to March 2023.

The entry to Memmo Principe Real hotel is a nondescript narrow tunnel access from R. Dom Pedro V that opens up to an expansive city vista on a short and steep descending driveway. There is little space for cars to maneuver in front of the hotel. An underground hotel garage level offers guest parking spaces.

The panaromic view seen from the hotel driveway is glimpsed from R. Dom Pedro V, the primary walking street through Principe Real. Many tourists walk from the street through the alley tunnel to stand in the hotel driveway for photos and selfies with a Lisbon city backdrop. R. Dom Pedro V  is on a hilltop ridge and sort of runs parallel to Ave. Liberdade down below. Memmo Principe Real hotel is built on the hillside slightly below the top of the ridge.

My travels around Europe reveal many types of bathroom symbols. Memmo Principe Real Lisbon had a design new to me.

The Room

Memmo Principe Real Lisbon has three floors with 41 hotel rooms. The garage level has 16 rooms. Second floor is lobby, restaurant and pool terrace. Third floor has 14 rooms. Fourth floor has 14 rooms and rooftop. I assume three of the numbered door rooms are part of suites.

The rooftop stairway was inaccessible during my stay. I don’t know if rooftop has any functional use for guests.

Our room was #402.

Our best memories of the hotel were the natural sounds from songbirds in the trees outside when the patio door was left open to the deck.
