Today I spent a couple hours studying Wyndham Rewards opportunities for high value points redemptions based on the Wyndham Rewards buy points 40% bonus points promotion through Jan 13, 2020. This is the first time I recall Wyndham Rewards offering discount points for sale through their own website.
40% bonus points on top of the regular $13 per 1,000 points purchase price drops the cost to $9.29 per 1,000 points. Wyndham Rewards members can buy a maximum 63,000 points ($585) during this sale.
Wyndham Rewards GoFree reward nights categorize nearly 9,000 hotels worldwide in three groups at 7,500 points, 15,000 points and 30,000 points.

My analysis only looked at Tier 1 and Tier 2 hotels. I don’t care about any 30,000 points Wyndham brand hotels since that is far more than I am willing to spend on a hotel reward night.
Wyndham Rewards Program Change: Wyndham Rewards used to offer suites at standard reward rates at some hotels. While I still see some higher category rooms available at hotels for reward nights, I did not find any suites available as GoFree reward nights at hotels where I used to regularly see suites offered for points as recently as April 2019.
The basic idea here is any Tier 1 hotel at 7,500 points with a posted room rate of more than $70 offers a room rate discount by redeeming points purchased at $9.29 per 1,000 points. You can argue $80 after tax since a paid night earns a minimum 1,000 points, so paying for a room keeps 8,500 points in your account. 8,500 points cost $79.
Any Tier 2 hotel with a room rate over $140-$150 will be cheaper to book buying Wyndham Rewards points during this sale.
There are some surprisingly good hotel deals to be found among Wyndham’s 9,000 hotels worldwide for reward nights using points you can buy at a discount for the next 5 weeks.

This is not a needle in the haystack find. I found at least a dozen hotel deals in Europe, Australia and North America. When it comes to buying hotel points, I simply need to convince myself that I can find a good deal in a place I’d like to travel. Honestly, San Francisco does not excite me for hotel deals. A Black Sea resort in Romania, an adventure destination like Queenstown, New Zealand or historic Hanseatic League cities on the Baltic are destinations that excite me.
Wyndham Rewards points can provide a nice hotel discount rate that have me excited to finally see Wyndham Rewards offer a buy points discount promotion.
