Hotel Review – Comfort Inn Carmel-by-the-Sea 48,000 points gave $1,000 added value

October is the best month of the year weather-wise for Central Coast California with most reliably the warmest days and least fog. Several members of my family came to Monterey over the past week for a visit. I booked my sisters into Comfort Inn Carmel-by-the-Sea for the weekend at 12,000 points per night. The four hotel nights were priced at $1,290 after tax. I paid $246 to buy 48,000 Choice Privileges on May 15, 2019 through the annual Daily Getaways U.S. Travel Association sales. Choice Privileges points provided over $1,000 added value for these hotel stays.

One of the best values over the past three years are Choice Hotels for hotel rooms using points in Carmel-by-the-Sea, a popular weekend vacation spot for Californians. From June to October room rates in Carmel-by-the-Sea hotels are typically $250 to over $300 per night on weekends. Last year from Sep 16 to Nov 30 Comfort Inn Carmel was 10,000 points on Sun-Thu weekday nights and 8,000 points on Fri-Sat weekend nights. This year from Sep 16-Nov 30 Choice Privileges points rates are 20,000 points weekdays and 12,000 points weekend nights.

One of the nice features about the split door is we ate lunch as a large family on the hotel patio and by leaving the top half of the door open and visible to us from the patio, anyone of us could simply walk up and open the bottom half by reaching inside to open the door. I did not need the room key to grab another beer, yet there was a feeling of more security than simply leaving the room door wide open.

The hotel location could not have been better for stepping onto Ocean Avenue to view the annual Carmel Pumpkin Roll.

Of course, Carmel Beach access is simply a matter of walking 0.6 miles downhill along Ocean Avenue. The water was tolerable on an 80-degree October Saturday.

  1. I’m curious about how Choice handles bookings for another person using your points. Any problems for your family at check in?
