Choice Privileges 8,000 points every 2 stays May 7-Aug 9, 2019

Choice Privileges renews its 8,000 points every 2 stays promotion for May 7 to August 9, 2019 under the summer marketing guise of earn a $50 gift card. To be clear, members earn a minimum 8,000 points every 2 stays at Choice Hotels.

If you want, you can redeem those 8,000 points for a $50 retail gift card through September 30, 2019, which is half off the normal 16,000 points rate.

Given that I redeemed 8,000 points in 2018 several times for hotels in the USA and Europe with room rates over $150 per night, I would never consider redeeming 8,000 Choice Privileges points for a $50 gift card.

This new promotional offer gives me a choice to make. I have a 3-night paid stay at one high quality Clarion Hotel booked for June. I also have a 3-night and a 2-night stay with other hotel chains in a city where I could switch one night to a Choice Hotel. But that means paying at least $25 more for the Choice Hotel than my hotel night with IHG (reducing the value of 8,000 points earned) or booking a lower quality hotel than the Radisson hotel I have booked. Or I could rebook my three nights at the Clarion as Night 1-Me, Night 2-my wife, Night 3-Me to get two stays.

Does a points plus cash qualify as a stay in the 8K bonus points promotion?

I don’t have any choice points and am going to Scandinavia for a few weeks. I have loved your blogs about the Clarion collection Hotels which was completely off my radar. Is it better to transfer 6K MR points and pay cash for remaining points per night or transfer over enough MR points for the whole stay? I have been able to take advantage of many Amex offers to generate quite a number of MR points. It’s just that MR points are worth so much more than Choice points. I know the daily giveaways is coming soon but I don’t want to lose certain reservations while they are available. ( My trip is less than 100 days away)

Can I make a points and cash res & then change it to all points if I get more points later before the stay (ie, from the Daily Giveaways or transferring MR points)? Or must the stay still be available using points at the date you get more points? I hope that question is clear.

@Darlene – Basically you will pay $2.50 more per 1,000 points booking Points + Cash reservations. If you value your AMEX points, then I would focus on transferring the minimum number of AMEX points to Choice Privileges points for Points+Cash reward nights and pay $7.50 per 1,000 points.

Unpredictable if you will be able to change Points+Cash reservations to all points, but irrelevant since once you will have paid for points with Points+Cash bookings or already transferred AMEX points. The money you spend for Choice Privileges Points+Cash reservations is nonrefundable. If you cancel the reward stay, then you will get back the points you already paid $7.50 per 1,000 points to buy.

In my experience, outside of Oslo or Bergen, many hotels in Norway and Sweden do not get many Choice Privileges points bookings. I had several Nordic Choice hotels in 2014 and 2015 not enter the correct codes for a Choice Privileges reward stay and my credit card was charged and then later refunded. The advantage to me was I earned 10,000 Nordic Choice Club points through all the mistakes, got my money back on my credit card charges and redeemed my points for a $300 free room in Copenhagen last summer.

Thanks for your quick reply. Do you know if a points plus cash booking would qualify for the 8K bonus points promotion?

  • Ric Garrido May 5, 2019

@Darlene – No. Points+Cash does not count as a stay for this promotion.
