152 Hotel Brands in Top 9 loyalty programs

Nine major hotel chains with loyalty programs currently number 152 different hotel brands for earning and redeeming points. Most of the major chains had at least one new hotel brand become part of their respective hotel loyalty program within the past year.

Smith Travel Research provides a hotel industry standard market segment ranking for most of the major chain brands based on average room rates from Luxury – Upper Upscale – Upscale – Upper Midscale – Midscale – Economy.

14. Nordic Choice Hotels – 180 hotels in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Baltics are available for Choice Privileges reward nights for 8,000 to 30,000 points.

Nordic Choice Hotels are in Ascend Collection, Clarion, Clarion Collection, Comfort and Quality hotel brands. For paid stays Nordic Choice Club loyalty program is a separate program for Nordic Choice Hotels and points earning. Choice Privileges points are not earned on paid stays.

Main point to know for travelers in Scandinavian is Clarion Collection brand hotels offer complimentary evening buffet in addition to free breakfast. This can be a big factor in the cost of travel in these countries where evening meals can easily be $30+ at a restaurant. Breakfast is included in all Nordic Choice Hotels. Dinner is not applicable to Clarion Hotels brand, only Clarion Collection hotels in Nordic Choice Hotels. Clarion Collection hotels in other places, like UK and USA, do not have this feature.)

Wyndham Rewards 19 hotel brands

Wyndham Hotels made a major acquisition of La Quinta Inn in 2018 to grow the midscale market segment of their portfolio.  Wyndham Rewards members will have nearly 900 hotels in La Quinta Inn for earning and burning points in 2019.

La Quinta Returns is still functioning as a separate hotel loyalty program for now. Wyndham Rewards elite members can status match into La Quinta Returns until the program is merged into Wyndham Rewards in ‘early 2019’.

The La Quinta Returns program is anticipated to be discontinued in early 2019. Until then, La Quinta Returns and Wyndham Rewards will remain two separate programs and members of each program can continue to earn and redeem points in accordance with each program’s respective terms and conditions.

Wyndham has the distinction to be the only hotel chain that actually dropped a long existing brand.  350 hotels in Knights Inn brand were sold to Red Lion Hotels. Knights Inn was Wyndham’s lowest economy market segment hotel brand.

Accor hotels has several other economy segment hotel brands that do not participate in Le Club Accorhotels. Ibis Budget is one of the non-participating brands.

Le Club Accorhotels integrated Fairmont Hotels, Swissotel and Raffles into the loyalty program effective July 2, 2018.
