My rock ‘n roll fantasy is go live in Leeds this winter

I’ll be in the UK during this promotion, but my hotel plans are already set for my trip and I don’t want to change them for this offer.

$150 one-way tickets from Oakland to London on Norwegian in January has me thinking about another trip to the UK.

The Met Hotel Leeds, UK = 44.50 GBP or $56 USD on Friday, Jan 13, 2019.

The Met Hotel Leeds, UK = 49.50 GBP or $63 USD on Sunday, Jan 13, 2019.

The Met Hotel Leeds can be booked for two stays for as little as $119 USD over the weekend of January 11-13. This would be a no-brainer good value deal to me if I lived within easy travel distance to Leeds.

IHG UK 2 stays to earn one free reward night does not have to cost too much

The last time I visited England’s industrial heartland was a stay in Manchester in 1999 in order to fly Cathay Pacific to Amsterdam. Our industrial Christmas tour 1999 of Manchester, Rotterdam and Barcelona earned 300,000+ frequent flyer miles for about $1,500 that trip through a Oneworld Alliance promotion – fly 5 alliance airlines and earn 100,000 miles. Those miles allowed us to fly British Airways First Class San Francisco to London for the first time.

I miss those days when flying was the best way to earn frequent flyer miles.

My initial impression of this IHG offer was the price would be too much to be any use for my travel style. Many of these 9 hotels are in the $150-200+ per night range. Then a look at room rates for The Met Hotel Leeds changed my mind to opening the till for an IHG adventure in the UK this winter of 2019.

This IHG Rewards Club offer is the kind of promotion that takes me to places I had not considered visiting before. This loyalty traveler may go live in Leeds this winter to pick up a free night.

I don’t mean ‘live’ in the sense for the word that rhymes with ‘give’ and involves a long-term commitment.  Rather, for me to go ‘live’ in Leeds in the long ‘i’ word sense, means like a live performance. As a travel writer I like to write and publish my travel impressions of a place in real time while experiencing a new city for the first time.

Leeds is a city I have never visited as a traveler. Leeds is primarily a place in my rock ‘n roll fantasy world. Leeds as a place name is one I was familiar with since at least 1972 through listening to The Who album Live at Leeds.

Though far more influential for me as a musical recording was the song Damaged Goods by the band Gang of Four from Leeds. That song is intrinsically associated in my mind with a serious personal relationship that took me from California to the Green Mountain state and ended as bitterly cold as the Vermont winter. I spent many hours on sub-zero walks through forests covered in deep snow playing songs like Damaged Goods in my head.

Damaged goods, send them back
I can’t work, I can’t achieve, send me back
Open the till, give me the change
You said, would do me good
Refund the cost
You said you’re cheap but you’re too much

Gang of Four – Damaged Goods

The spring thaw melted my cold heart and summer offered newfound bliss with a musician, while driving around the countryside finding abandoned granite quarry swimming holes in the day and sleeping outdoors at night. After 14 months in Vermont, train travel across Canada carried me back to the west coast for the start of college and another phase in my life. And by the following summer of 1982 I was hooked up with the woman who is still in my life as my travel wife.

Kelley is definitely more of an IHG Wotton House Surrey kind of traveler, if I end up planning a trip with her.

Wotton House Hotel near Dorking, is an estate like no other. In what was once the former seat of the Evelyn family, this 17th-century house has a long tradition of entertaining guests. Here, a mix of original features and 21st-century style set the tone so that all events are memorable: a wedding day like no other, business meetings that become an unexpected pleasure, training that delights and inspires. Dining is relaxed whether it’s a meal in the 1877 Restaurant, or a party for 200 with simple, un-fussy yet delicious food. Afternoon tea is served daily in The Morning Room, whilst upstairs; you’ll find a collection of beautifully refurbished bedrooms and suites. 13 acres of grounds make it great to grab a pair of Hunters from the boot room and explore the Italian gardens, Roman temples and manicured lawns. All found just 10-minutes from J9 of the M25, with Gatwick Airport 40 minutes away and fast connections direct into London Waterloo.

When I clickthrough on this offer, it’s asking for a promotional code. Any idea what the code might be?
