While many readers are probably aware about cheap flight opportunities to Iceland with Wow Air, in this piece my focus is how to use cheap WOW flights to Iceland primarily as positioning flights for low cost tickets on other airlines from Iceland to other European destinations.

WOW Air offers flights as low as $100 one way from Boston to Iceland and $130 one way San Francisco or Los Angeles to Iceland.

From Iceland, Wizz Air, EasyJet and Norwegian Air offer more low cost airline flights to many other cities across Europe from Spain to Scandinavia and Central European countries like Hungary and Poland.

WOW Air  Boston BOS – Keflavik KEF, Iceland

$100 one way Sun April 8

BOS-KEF $100 WOW Apr9

WOW Air  Los Angeles LAX – Keflavik KEF, Iceland

$130 one way Tue April 10

LAX-KEF $130ow Apr10 WOW

There are frequently lower ticket prices flying WOW Air from San Francisco and Los Angeles to Stockholm via Iceland compared to Iceland as a destination.

WOW Air  San Francisco SFO – Keflavik KEF, Iceland – Stockholm ARN

$170 one way Sat April 21

SFO-ARN $170 WOW Apr21

The one way price SFO to Iceland is nearly 50% more at $250.

WOW Air  San Francisco SFO – Keflavik KEF, Iceland

$250 one way Sat Apr 21

SFO-KEF $250 WOW Apr21

Use WOW primarily as a positioning flight for Iceland

For all these reasons, you can potentially book a lower cost trip to Europe using WOW Air to fly to Iceland as a destination, then book another low cost airline from Iceland to Europe.

Or book WOW Air one way to London or Stockholm and get off in Iceland, then fly another airline to continue your trip.

There are frequently lower cost alternatives to Europe flying to Iceland and buying a separate connecting ticket for eastern European destinations like Prague, Budapest, Gdansk, Krakow, Warsaw, Riga and Vilnius.

I used this strategy in April 2017 when I flew San Francisco to Iceland on a $69 WOW Air ticket to Copenhagen. I stayed overnight in Iceland and flew Wizz Air to Vilnius, Lithuania the next day for $75.

Direct flights from Keflavik, Iceland

A useful tool on Kayak.com is a list of nonstop flights from any airport.

Here is a list of all the airlines and destinations from Keflavik KEF in April 2018:

EasyJet to UK airports, Wizz to Poland and Baltic cities or Norwegian to Spain offer cheap flights from Keflavik to many destinations around mainland Europe.

For example, a stopover in Iceland on the way to Warsaw, Poland is possible flying on a $170 ticket San Francisco to Stockholm on Sat April 21.

Exit the plane in Iceland with all your carry-on only stuff on Sun April 22 and throwaway the connecting flight.

Spend all day Sunday and Monday in Reykjavik from 5am Sunday morning until Monday evening and catch a 12:30am flight out of Reykjavik Tuesday morning April 23 to Warsaw.

Wizz Air  Keflavik, Iceland KEF – Warsaw WAW, Poland

$60 one way  Tue April 24

KEF-WAW $60 Wizz Apr24

Total ticket price = $230 SFO to Warsaw one way with an Iceland stopover.

$230 saves $20 on the one way ticket price to Iceland and gets you to your destination without flying all the way to Stockholm and flying to Warsaw from there.

Norwegian Airlines is $293 to fly SFO – Oslo – Warsaw on Sat April 21.

Norwegian Airlines Keflavik KEF – Madrid, Spain

$82 one way Tuesday April 24

KEF-MAD $82 DY Apr24
