Loyalty Traveler note on IHG’s weird calculation of 2x/3x points:
Example points calculation above is from IHG Rewards Club T&C. This is not the way I would have expected the math to be calculated by using an average nightly rate to determine double and triple bonus points.
The lower Thursday night rate of $100, combined with an average rate for all three nights at $133 used to calculate bonus, results in an overall lower amount for weekend night triple bonus points earned.
This is how I would have calculated earning for the room nights listed above, if there were not an IHG Rewards Club example contradicting the logical math.
- Thursday Night Rate: $100
- Friday Night Rate: $150
- Saturday Night Rate: $150
- 3 Nights Total Rate: $400.00
Total Base Points Earned on Qualifying Stay = 4,000 points. ($400 x 10 points/$1)
Double Bonus Points Awarded for Thursday Night = 1,000 bonus pointsÂ
- (Double bonus points = $100 x 10 points/$1)
Triple Bonus Points Awarded for Friday Night = 3,000 bonus points
- (Triple bonus points = $150 x 20 points/$1)
Triple Bonus Points Awarded for Saturday Night = 3,000 bonus points.
- (Triple bonus points = $150 x 20 points/$1)
Total Bonus Points Awarded = 7,000 bonus points
Total Points Earned = 11,000 points.
The overall difference in points is relatively minor when using a 3-nights average room rate at 10,650 points (IHG math) vs. 11,000 points based on each separate night’s rate (logical math).
But, if the IHG Rewards Club T&C example is the way bonus points will be calculated, then it favors a 3-night hotel stay at a Holiday Inn Express with high weekday rates and low weekend rates.
The weird IHG math will be irrelevant if your 3-night stay does not combine weekday double points and weekend triple points.
