On the Level $255 round trip Oakland to Barcelona

Yesterday, the new Iberia affiliate low cost carrier airline Level launched ticket sales for its new Los Angeles LAX and Oakland OAK to Barcelona, Spain routes starting in June. Ticket prices for Oakland to Barcelona BCN nonstop start at $149 one way and one way Barcelona to Oakland is $106.

There are extra charges for self-select seat assignment ($40) and checked bag fees ($44) each way for USA-Europe routes. Similar to Norwegian Airlines, Level allows a free standard size carry-on bag and a smaller personal item.

The real deal here is for the flyer willing to take whatever seat is assigned by the airline, fly with carry on bags only and bring your own food to keep the ticket price at $150 one way to Barcelona and $106 Barcelona to Oakland.

Iberia Level One Free Carry On

Iberia Level Oakland – Barcelona $150 one way ticket only allows one carry on bag and one smaller personal item. Checked bag fees apply if you need that service.

One piece cabin baggage 56cm x 45 cm x 25 cm / 22in x 18in x 10in included in ticket price. I do not see any weight limitation for the carry on bag in Iberia rules. Simply says you must be able to lift and store the bag yourself in the overhead bin.

Oneworld Sapphire and Emerald Elite members do not get one free checked bag on Level flights, designated with flight numbers 26xx.

(1) Iberia Platinum customers and American Airlines and British Airways Emerald customers. Emerald customers of other OneWorld companies have the benefit of an additional piece of luggage (23 kg).

(2) Iberia Gold customers and Oneworld Sapphire customers are allowed the benefit of an additional piece of luggage (23 kg).

(3) Iberia Plus Gold and Silver holders and Oneworld Sapphire customers will be entitled to 1 piece of additional baggage on tickets with an allowance of 0 or 1 pieces.

The Iberia Level $44 bag fee is comparable to Norwegian Airlines $45 fee and lower than WOW Air $70 checked bag fee for west coast flights.

Two One Way Tickets are Less than One Round Trip Ticket

Similar to Norwegian Air lower fares for Europe-USA one way flights booked through a European website, Iberia Level one way tickets are lower priced for Barcelona to California, if booked separately as two one way tickets rather than as a round trip ticket OAK-BCN-OAK. Two low fare one way tickets in June OAK-BCN $149 and BCN-OAK $106 make a $255 round trip ticket.

While I was not around my computer yesterday to write about these deals on Loyalty Traveler, I was able to access a computer to evaluate the sale and put a booking on hold for 24 hours at no charge.

I ran into an issue when I tried to book the return flight at $106 one way Barcelona to Oakland. I assume there was an immense amount of traffic on the Iberia website and I kept getting technical errors as I tried to place a hold on return flights, until eventually, after about 20 minutes and several attempts to book two one-way tickets from Barcelona to California, ticket prices increased from the low $106 fares in June to double and triple the price in the $200 – $300+ range for dates I wanted.

One Way Tickets to Spain also works for Us

This past month I had been looking to book a trip to Europe in June, if I could find a good fare. These Iberia fares yesterday were on the Level.

This is where I can explain my common ticketing strategy for cheaper flights to Europe.

Ticket prices from Barcelona to Stockholm are under $50 one way with Norwegian in June. We can fly to Stockholm and fly British Airways and American Airlines back to San Jose, California for $435 round trip, coming back to California in June and returning to Stockholm next Christmas.

That gives me 8 months to find a low fare ticket back from Europe to California to get home next Christmas season.

There are still low fare tickets this Saturday morning at $149 OAK-BCN and $106 BCN-OAK, however, most June dates are gone.

I found $106 in June to LAX this morning, but I like the idea of flying one-way to Barcelona in June to try out Level airline service. We can fly home from Stockholm on a low fare American Airlines ticket that will take us back to Europe next Christmas season.
