SAS Scandinavian Airlines has a weekend sale to Scandinavia, ending Sunday night Oct 30, from all its gateways in the USA: Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco and Washington for travel departures January 11 to March 31. Ticket prices during this sale are in the high $400s and low $500s from USA gateways to Denmark, Norway and Sweden, plus Helsinki, Finland.

The real deals are flights from Los Angeles and San Francisco priced from $495 to $531 round trip. These fares are only $10 to $30 more than flying from east coast airports to Scandinavia.

Not all of these European destinations are low priced from each airport. San Francisco has low ticket prices to Norway and Sweden ($514 SFO – Stockholm), while Los Angeles has low ticket prices to Denmark ($495 LAX – Copenhagen) and Norway.

Copenhagen is $648 from SFO, but only $495 from LAX. Stockholm is $514 from San Francisco, but $598-$646 from LAX.

There are lower priced tickets available on these same dates for $514 round trip by flying United SFO to Chicago ORD or Newark EWR. From experience, I choose to fly directly to Europe from California in winter. If I am going to be snowed in some place for the night and miss a flight, I’d rather be stuck in Copenhagen than Chicago or Newark.

This is one of the best winter travel deals from San Francisco to Europe seen in the past month.
