Star Alliance member TAP Portugal flies between Lisbon or Porto, Portugal and Newark EWR, New York JFK, Boston and Miami. Some of the lowest fares to many cities in Europe over the past couple months have been TAP Portugal sales to regional airports in Spain, France and Italy priced in the $400s and $500s. TAP Portugal also has flights to London and Germany that are often deeply discounted.

TAP Portugal Deep Discount Economy O fares are best to credit to Miles & More for miles

Upfront, one of the main things to know about these low fares on TAP Portugal is they book in economy O class, a booking code that does not earn miles in United Mileage Plus and only 10% miles in Air Canada Aeroplan or even TAP Portugal’s own Victoria frequent flyer program. The best program for earning miles on these economy O booking code tickets is Miles & More (Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian) for 25% flight miles on the USA-Lisbon segments and 125 flat rate miles for intra-Europe flight segments.

TAP Portugal allows free stopovers in Portugal

TAP Portugal’s website has a function for booking a free stopover in Lisbon or Porto for 1 to 3 nights. I have unsuccessfully played around with the function to try and price a ticket with a free stopover. I have not ever given it a real determined effort to make it work. What I frequently find in my TAP Portugal searches is a 22-hour layover in Lisbon in one direction at no additional fare cost or maybe $5 more for an opportunity to have a full day in Portugal when traveling to some other place in Europe.

I find it much easier to book a stopover ticket online with Icelandair on their website. I think it might be easier to simply call up TAP Portugal to arrange a stopover ticket, if you would like that option.

New York JFK and Newark EWR Fares to Europe

Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Germany and UK have fares in the upper $400s to $500s round trip for travel departures October 2016 to March 2017.

Lowest fares are to London, Manchester and Paris for travel October to December.
