Momondo.com Airfare Searches and Lower fares on OTA sites

This airfare deal is a good opportunity to mention that I met with representatives of Momondo.com at the TBEX conference in Stockholm a few days ago. Momondo is a Copenhagen based meta-search engine for airfare searches. I questioned a few weeks ago on a Loyalty Traveler blog post how OTA airline ticket booking sites linked to through Momondo.com airfare searches can regularly have lower fares than the airline sites themselves for the same flights and these lower fares are not found on major OTA sites like Expedia, Orbitz and Kayak.

Loyalty Traveler –  Significantly lower United Airlines ticket prices with OTA sites. How do they do it? (June 30, 2016).

I asked the Momondo.com reps and their response was their search engines produce fares from OTA sites all over the world and they verify the ticket prices are legitimate as advertised. The reasons these OTA sites can offload tickets at discount prices are varied, including selling off bulk ticket purchases at cost when they want to unload inventory they have access to, even taking a loss on some ticket purchases (kind of like web advertising).

They also said they link to some airfare OTA sites that do not have affiliate links with Momondo.com and that also provides lower ticket prices at times than a consumer will see with other meta-search sites like Kayak.com and SkyScanner.com. Anyway, it all seemed up and up. If you feel comfortable booking tickets with obscure OTA sites, then you can get even bigger fare discounts.

  1. I noticed that some of these OTA’s only offer a 4hr refund/cancellation policy so make sure before purchasing to literally read the fine print – some solid deep discount deals though!
