AA/UA Chicago fare war $549 Paris, $592 London, $531 Amsterdam, $616 Munich, $625 Frankfurt October

Another sign of an impending fare war comes out of Chicago today with American Airlines attacking SkyTeam and Star Alliance routes to Amsterdam and Paris (Air France/KLM/Delta SkyTeam routes) and Frankfurt and Munich (Lufthansa/United/Star Alliance routes) for limited departure dates from October 6-20. So far there is no response from Delta or United on these routes, but low United fares out of Newark to Europe and low American fares out of Chicago seem to indicate this could be another fare war weekend with the major alliances lowering ticket prices today on prime routes to Europe like London and Paris.

Update Fri July 8, 4:00pm Pacific time: Fare War On. UA beats AA Germany fares. AA drops London, Amsterdam and Paris low fares.

AA raised its fares to London, Paris and Amsterdam. Munich and Frankfurt still at prices shown here. Major change is United matched/beat American Airlines fares with a much longer availability window.  United Airlines nonstop flights are $603 round trip Chicago -Munich and $620 Chicago ORD – Frankfurt Oct 15-Dec 15.

American Airlines adjusted and expanded its low fare departure dates:

AA Chicago Munich $616 Oct 22 – Nov 12.

United $590 – $603 ORD-MUC Oct 15 – Dec 15.

United $620 ORD-FRA Oct 15 – Dec 15

American $631 ORD-FRA Nov 18-Dec 15 departure dates.

American $618 ORD – Munich Oct 22 – Nov 12

American Airlines Chicago – Europe Low Fares Oct 6-20 departures only

Chicago ORD – Amsterdam AMS $531

Chicago ORD – London LHR $592 (AA $611 nonstop flights)

American had similar fares on these routes at $40 to $50 lower last Sunday, July 3 and Delta and United were matching. I would not be surprised if DL and UA match these fares or drop them even lower this weekend.
