My articles these past three days on low fares to Europe in the $400s to Paris from the legacy carriers American, Delta and United focused on fares from Washington IAD, yet there are similar fares to many airports in Europe from Baltimore BWI and Washington national DCA. These low fares, like BWI-Paris at $451 round trip probably will end today when Icelandair’s 96-hour Sale to Europe ends at midnight Sunday June 12 Pacific time.
Icelandair put Paris, London, Munich, Frankfurt, Brussels and Copenhagen on sale from Boston, New York, Washington IAD, Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver and Seattle. These are the primary airports where we have seen the very low fares to Europe since Thursday for fall and winter 2017 travel. Icelandair’s sale is only for Sep 15-Dec 15. The big three airlines have some routes limited to these same dates, yet other routes are on sale all the way through April 2017. And other cities like Zurich, Amsterdam, Manchester and Birmingham are also available at low fares from these USA airports.
Icelandair flies out of Washington IAD, so fares to Paris, London, Germany are slightly lower from IAD than BWI and DCA. The fare difference may be so slight, $5 to $20 more per ticket from BWI/DCA on most routes, that BWI/DCA is the better choice for convenience. Another aspect of BWI/DCA is many of these flights are connecting flights to another US airport for transatlantic flight. This means your flight can be routed for a longer itinerary in flight miles if you want to maximize miles flown or want more alternatives to IAD for flight itineraries. IAD has more direct flights where your first flight is the transatlantic flight.

Mileage Run fares to Europe
While researching this piece I came across another aspect of these fares from Washington DC, New York and Chicago. If you book tickets with a two day return, the price on many of these routes drops into the $400s. In fact, much of Europe is accessible for round trip ticket prices in the $400s, especially with Delta and to some extent United. American is not really competing on these mileage run fares. Paris does not drop to $300s.
One aspect of these fares to point out for mileage runners is many Delta routes are about $100 lower if you have a two day return. For example, the fare to Venice VCE drops to $457 for a Friday departure and Saturday or Sunday return compared to $660 for a Monday return.
