Cathay Pacific $890 LAX to Maldives one-stop via Hong Kong

Cathay Pacific has a relatively low fare from Los Angeles to Male, Maldives at $890 round trip. This is a one stop routing via Hong Kong in economy class N. Advantage of this routing is simple one stop connection in Hong Kong.

The fare from San Francisco is $905 to $915 round trip.

Disadvantage of fare is Cathay Pacific economy N code ticket does not earn miles in Alaska Mileage Plan or American AAdvantage. Best earning is 50% with FinnAir or 25% miles with British Airways, Cathay Pacific or Qatar. At 20,472 flight miles round trip, this is still over 5,000 miles with BA, CX or 10,000 miles with FinnAir.

This Cathay Pacific fare was around one month ago for April and May departures. The schedule today has fares of $890 to $915 for most weeks from late August to early December 2016.

The lowest fare I have seen to the Maldives in past year was flying China Eastern ($598 round trip last August for October 2015 travel).

China Eastern $598 Los Angeles to Maldives (Aug 9, 2016) on a one stop via Shanghai PVG and some of those low fare routings were two or three stops.

LAX-HKG-MLE-HKG-LAX = 20,472 flight miles. Economy N class earns 25% miles in British Airways and Cathay Pacific or 50% miles with FinnAir. No miles for AAdvantage or Alaska Mileage Plan.

  1. @Matt – Good question. I priced Hong Kong stopover in one direction LAX-MLE at $905 fare and stopover in Hong Kong both directions at $970 round trip.

Stopovers certainly make the 10,000 flight miles easier to bear in economy class if you spend a couple days each way in Hong Kong.

HKG-MLE is 3,000 miles and HKG-LAX is 7,260 miles each way.

I made that LAX-HKG flight a few times and the duration is a challenge. I’d prefer traveling to south Asia via Tokyo to break up the flight more into around 5,000 mile flight segments.
