Since most international flights from the USA are to Auckland, this can be a cheaper deal to get directly to Christchurch on South Island or a more southerly point of North Island, like Wellington, rather than flying to Auckland as a destination and adding travel from there. Fiji Airways site shows this ‘Bula Special’ ticket class is economy R booking code. ITA Matrix showed these Fiji Airways flights at $848 with outbound in economy R and inbound economy T.
Unfortunately, economy R booking class is not a miles earning fare for 75% American Airlines AAdvantage miles. Fiji Airways T class earns 75% AAdvantage flight miles. This ticket might be worth a call to compare the buy-up to T class price.
Flying around New Zealand with Jetstar and Air New Zealand
Flights within New Zealand can be relatively inexpensive with low cost carrier Jetstar offering flights between Auckland and places like Queenstown and Dunedin in the southern part of South Island for $70 one-way. Air New Zealand competes with low fares for many of these routes.
