10 of 16 Monterey area hotels offer Choice Privileges FlexRewards

Choice Hotels International recently launched a redesigned website with some new program features like Choice Privileges FlexRewards for points discounts on reward nights during slower periods of the week. Slower hotel traffic on weekends is the typical pattern for some places like city business districts and airport hotels, where business travelers make up a large proportion of guests. Weeknights are the slower period for hotels in other locations; particularly popular tourist destinations.

My hometown of Monterey is a good example of a location where weeknight hotel room rates are frequently less than half the price of weekend hotel rates when the tourists fill the town. Choice Privileges FlexRewards option is in place for 10 of 16 hotels in the Monterey Peninsula/Salinas area, where reward night rates using points are priced lower Sunday to Thursday than reward night rates for Friday and Saturday stays.

 Choice FlexRewards

Loyalty Traveler – *Choice Privileges 2016 program changes (Feb 17, 2016).

In my post linked above, I questioned whether the Choice Privileges changes eliminated the option to redeem Choice Privileges points for hotel reward nights at Nordic Choice Hotels in Scandinavia.

Nordic Choice Hotels operates its own hotel guest loyalty program with Nordic Choice Club. Choice Privileges members can book reward nights at Nordic Choice Hotels, however, paid stays at 180 Nordic Choice Hotels do not earn points in the Choice Privileges program. You need to join Nordic Choice Club to earn points for paid stays.

I received an email from the head of Choice Privileges stating the inability to book reward nights at Nordic Choice Hotels is a temporary glitch in the new website redesign. They are working to fix this function. Choice Privileges members will still be able to use points for Nordic Choice Hotel stays in Scandinavia. This is far and above the best value for Choice Privileges points in my travels when hotel rates are often over $200 USD per night in Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

That’s great news about the Scandinavian reward nights. Thanks for tracking that down. Hopefully they can confirm a fix prior to this year’s Daily Getaways, if they are taking part again.

the trouble is most of these locatiosn have terrible reviews OR don’t provide great value. Any particular one on this list that you like?

@rob s. – I created this list solely as an example of Choice Privileges FlexRewards. In the Monterey area there are many fine properties to choose from and I would not consider most of these Choice Hotels.

What I can say is Clarion Hotel Monterey Munras has an indoor pool. A rare amenity in this area.

Clarion Collection Pacific Grove and Clarion Collection Carmel have great locations but don’t expect much from the actual hotel room. Comfort Inn Carmel also good location.

In Monterey, Munras Street is preferable and walking distance to beach. Fremont Street is a less desirable area to be in Monterey and farther from beach and historic Monterey.

    Ric,

Thanks so much for tracking down the info about booking award nights in Scandinavia.

As for their domestic properties, some are quite nice, and relative bargains, including some Rodeway Inns and Econo Lodges. However, some not so much.

With the luxury of vacationing during weekdays, Monterey is my “go-to” with Choice. (I’m hardly at the hotel, anyway.) I’m glad to see that the weekday/weekend divergence isn’t wild for most of them. But the weekday points are the same as they always have been, and the weekend rates have increased. So the weeknights are discounted ONLY in this sense.

But I’ll still stay revenue on weeknights. One of the best values – place for price – in the Choice system. Especially now that EconoLodge and Rodeway are full members of Choice Privileges.
