Flight deals to Australia are hard to find. The remoteness of the continent from the USA, across the Pacific Ocean and down under means limited flights and high prices. My rule of thumb is any fare under $1,000 round trip to Australia is a good deal and far lower than average fares.
Star Alliance member Air New Zealand has one-stop flights via Auckland to the major airports of Australia for around $959 USD round trip with limited departure dates from April through September. Google Flights shows from 2 to 12 dates each month around the $960 USD ticket price for SFO to Sydney.
Air New Zealand low fares April to September and November 2016.
- SFO – MEL Melbourne $947 USD
- SFO – SYD Sydney $959 USD
- SFO – BNE Brisbane $959 USD
United Airlines has nonstop flights Los Angeles to Sydney in November for as low as $943 round trip.
United Airlines Los Angeles LAX – Sydney SYD (nonstop)
$942.56 USD Wednesday November 2 – Wednesday November 16
United does not offer these November low fares from SFO. Air New Zealand has $959 round trip fares in November and low fares for April to September travel.
Air New Zealand San Francisco – Auckland NZ AKL – Brisbane BNE
$960.16 (Priceline ticket) Tuesday July 26 – Monday August 8
Australia is never a cheap travel destination from the USA. My trips to New Zealand (2005) and Australia (2003) were ticketed with First Class mileage awards. I want to return to both these countries at some date.
There were a couple of times this past year when I showed how flights to southeast Asia in the $400 range coupled with low cost round trip flights from Asia to Australia in the $300 range can reduce round trip travel to $700, if you have plenty of time. Booking United nonstop LAX to Sydney for $943 is probably worth the extra cost to save travel time for most travelers.
