SPG released its 2016-Q1 promotion Take Two offering double points for Starwood Hotel stays worldwide from January 11 through April 30. There is also a supplementary 250 bonus points per night at around 260 hotels, less than 20% of Starwood Hotels globally.
Double points means 4 points per dollar rather than the normal 2 base points per dollar earned for Starwood Hotel stays.
Double Points is a weak promotion offer for anyone who is not a high spender. Spend $1,000 at Starwood Hotels and you earn 2,000 additional points with this promotion at 80% of Starwood Hotels.
250 Starpoints per Night
Earning 250 bonus points per night is a good value offer. A 2-night stay spending $200 earns 900 extra bonus Starpoints between 2x points + 250 points per night.
The problem with the 250 bonus points is few locations offer the nightly bonus at participating hotels.
New York City, Chicago, Boston, San Diego, Las Vegas and Hawaii participate in the USA. No hotels in Florida, Texas, or California, outside the San Diego area. There are only six U.S. states with participating hotels for the 250 bonus points per night.
Europe only has hotels in Germany and Spain offering 250 bonus points per night.
China, Japan, Turkey, Egypt and UAE have lots of participating hotels.
Overall this is a minimal value promotion for most SPG members. I am curious to see what kind of offers will happen once Marriott International takes over Starwood Hotels in 2016?
I hope for one big splash with a Marriott Rewards bonus points promotion when Starwood Hotels enters their pool of hotels.
