AAdvantage 2016 Changes to Off-Peak Seasons for discount economy awards

Probably the most significant change to AAdvantage economy class awards as of March 22, 2016 are changes to MileSAAver Off Peak season dates. Currently the price for an Off Peak USA-Europe economy class award is 20,000 miles from October 15 to May 15 on American Airlines flights. This 7-month period for discount awards at 20,000 miles is a strong competitive edge for AAdvantage over Mileage Plus and Delta awards to Europe. The new Off Peak season dates for Europe reduce the availability of the 22,500 miles one way discount award in 2016 to about half the dates of the current 7-month period.

USA to Europe Frequent Flyer Awards Economy Class

American Airlines = 20,000 miles MileSAAver Off Peak (current price rises to 22,500 miles effective March 22, 2016. MileSAAver standard award level is 30,000 miles each way and unchanged.)

Delta Airlines = 30,000 miles or more.

United Airlines = 30,000 miles Saver Award

American Airlines increases to 22,500 miles each way for MileSAAver Off Peak economy class awards between the USA and Europe as of March 22, 2016. The miles increase is relatively minor at 12.5%. The bigger change is the reduction in dates for Off Peak MileSAAver award travel between the USA and Europe.

New Off Peak Dates for USA – Europe discount economy awards

Europe: January 10 – March 14, November 1 – December 14 at 22,500 miles each way beginning March 22, 2016. Current award level is 20,000 miles for Oct 15 to May 15.

The dates for Off Peak travel have been reduced by half. December 15 to January 9 cuts out discount award holiday travel. Two months from March 15 to May 15 are eliminated. That is a big adjustment to discount awards for Europe travel.

Ric, your article reminds me why I read your blog. Although I have read about a half dozen other blogs that talked about the AA changes, none of them highlighted the change in time period for the discount travel.

For me, this is the only problematic change. Especially, for US-Europe travel.

So I can still book discounted Europe for travel on , say May 3 of 2016, until March 21, 2016?

You can book award travel at the current miles prices through March 21, 2016 for award travel as far out as the schedule allows. New miles rates begin March 22, 2016.

You can book tickets today for July 2016 flights at the current rates. By March 2016, you can probably book some January 2017 travel at current rates.

+1 on giving some focus to the economy award changes. Most BA brethren have lost sight of anything beyond J/F.

    Some additional points:
    1. Bolivia and Manaus (Brazil) moved into S America 1, and Venezuela is moved into S America 2.
    2. Off peak PARTNER awards for Hawaii and Asia 1 have been eliminated, in addition to the removal of S America 2 off peak awards for both AA and partners.
    3. Lots of increases to regular MileSaaver prices in economy on both AA and partners as well.
