Lower Cost Award Flights for American AAdvantage members
AirBerlin transatlantic flights price at low award fees using AAdvantage miles. AirBerlin flight awards for USA-Europe typically price at $5.60 to $30 for transatlantic travel. Award travel via London and British Airways is a minimum of $80 in fees, more commonly about $100 for each way of a round trip AAdvantage USA-Europe economy award. Fees rise to $200 and more each direction when a British Airways transatlantic flight is included in the AAdvantage award ticket.
The best deal I found for my paid economy class September flight to Europe was Orange County to Chicago on American, where I picked up Air Berlin ORD-Dusseldorf and Air Berlin DUS to Copenhagen. My ticket was $200 less than any other California to Europe option at the time I purchased in late July 2015.
AirBerlin somewhere over the islands of Denmark from Dusseldorf – Copenhagen flight in September 2015.
One of the primary benefits for American AAdvantage members of new AirBerlin service to Boston, Dallas and San Francisco is the potential for increased availability of lower cost award flights when redeeming AAdvantage miles, while bypassing London and British Airways.
AirBerlin flights should give San Francisco, Boston and Dallas airport flyers good value for redeeming AAdvantage miles, if AirBerlin releases award seats to AAdvantage.
