Clarion Bergen Airport modern style

a car parked outside of a hotel

Clarion Bergen Airport was one of the nicest airport hotels I have stayed in and one of the best Nordic Choice Hotels rooms I’ve seen. I changed my reservation this week from a downtown Bergen hotel to the airport after visiting the Clarion hotel a couple of weeks ago while waiting for a flight out of Bergen BGO.

Clarion Bergen Airport

The hotel’s proximity to the airport is about 200 meters from the main terminal doors, making it the closest lodging to the airport. Bergen Airport is in the process of new terminal construction with light rail connection to city center, scheduled to open in 2017. The project will also include another Comfort Hotel by Nordic Choice Hotel and a Scandic Hotel.

New Bergen Airport terminal will open in 2017 with light rail. Terminal construction seen from Clarion Bergen Airport hotel room.

There was no problem checking into the hotel and the front desk receptionist recognized I was staying on a Choice Privileges points booking. There was confusion on my previous hotel stay at Clarion Collection Hotel Arcticus Harstad over the Choice Privileges points booking, which seems to be common when staying at Nordic Choice Hotels outside the major cities. Bergen gets lots of American tourists.

Room 447

The room key card is a radio frequency card type. I waved the card and heard no click and did not see a light flicker. I tried again. And again. Kind of annoyed about needing to go back downstairs for another key card, I tried the door handle and it opened. The key card is a silent entry door.

Inside the door I was impressed by the room décor style. Two other Nordic Choice Hotels of about a dozen I have been inside seemed this upscale and they were both Ascend Collection properties with The Thief Oslo and Farris Bad in Larvik, Norway. Clarion Collection No 13 in Bergen is pretty cool too.

I missed taking a photo of the window wall with the comfortable chair.

There were no bath amenities besides the two soap dispensers and there was only one hand towel and one bath towel. No floor towel for the shower.

Clarion Bergen Airport also functions as a conference hotel. There were conferences both times I visited the hotel. The breakfast and restaurant space is large. Morning breakfast is in a more open space past the area seen in the photos above.

Clarion BGO breakfast

All the usual stuff for breakfast with a larger spread than most Nordic Choice Hotels. There is seating for 100 or more in the breakfast room area.

Listen to the Music

There is a music theme around this hotel. Normally I stay at Clarion Collection hotels when in Scandinavia for the complimentary dinner buffet. Important to note that Clarion Hotels in Nordic Choice without the word ‘Collection’ do not have complimentary evening food. I stayed at Clarion Royal Christiania in Oslo last year and that hotel also had a music theme.

The fourth floor music rocked the elevator area. In the conference center area were headphones, chairs and a Bang & Olufsen CD rack. I always desired some B&O equipment.

The hotel conference rooms all have music theme names: Track 1, Feel the Music, Repeat, Play & Forward, Stop & Rewind, Lyrics.

Clarion Bergen Airport CD Swap

One of the hotel’s coolest features is a small box for CD swap. Trade your CD for one in the box. The rules are simple, “bring one – take oneâ€.

One of the other features I liked about the lobby space were scales to weigh your luggage. Useful feature when flying Norwegian Air or other airlines where bag weight means the difference between free and paid luggage.

Scandinavian design chairs. They did not look comfortable to me, but sitting in one changed my first impression.

The small design touches in the public spaces are what turned me on about this hotel. I enjoyed looking at things around the rooms.

Clarion Bergen Airport is 16,000 Choice Privileges point per standard reward night. I stayed using Choice Privileges Points Plus Cash for 8,000 points + $60. The published room rate was 1,740 NOK or $213 USD.

Typically, how advance do you book your choice hotel bookings? I was told that the award space opens only 1 month before.

  • Ric Garrido September 23, 2015

Hotels outside of North America can be booked 60 days in advance for North American members. The 30 day booking applies for reservations within North America.

I am currently Choice Privileges Gold and I have a 50-day window for North America bookings. I am at 19 nights for 2015 and one more night will give me Platinum status for 2016 with a 75 day window for bookings. I have 2 paid nights and 17 award nights in 2015.

I book hotels when I know I need a room. I booked this hotel stay 5 days before arrival. I had booked Clarion Collection No 13 Bergen July 28 for the night and changed to the airport so I would not need to catch the bus into Bergen and back to the airport.

    Awesome, thanks for your reply.
That totally makes sense. Norway trip coming up next year for me, I need to plan few things ahead. With so much of choice hotels around and as I plan to drive, I’d need the 75 day window for award booking.
May be I can try status matching Starwood Platinum. Do you know it is allowed?
    Have a great day.
