Ticket prices from San Francisco to several Scandinavian airports in Demark, Norway and Sweden are priced in the $600s for departures in September and October with American Airlines and British Airways. Scandinavia today is once again the low fare gateway to Europe, as has been the case for most of the past six months.
If you are not traveling in the next two months, then lower fares will likely return for late fall and winter travel.
Low Fares on American Airlines for September and October departures
- Billund BLL Denmark $644
- Copenhagen CPH Denmark $669
- Gothenburg GOT Sweden $686
- Stockholm ARN Sweden $646
- Bergen BGO Norway $678
- Oslo OSL Norway $678
- Stavanger SVG Norway $678
Low ticket prices to Norway look to be the most available departure dates with travel this week possible. Watch out for overnight layovers in London on the return segments.
American Airlines – San Francisco SFO – Copenhagen CPH
$668.80 Monday September 28 – Monday October 12
Note the actual base fare is priced at $2.00 round trip. The other $666.80 are taxes and fees.
Los Angeles has more frequent low fares than San Francisco due to the presence of Norwegian Airlines flying out of LAX. The itinerary above is almost identical to my current ticket I flew this week departing Orange County SNA and returning via LAX with Air Berlin and British Airways flights. I would have saved about $200 in airfare between Monterey and Southern California if there had been any low fares from San Francisco one month ago when I purchased my ticket to Copenhagen.
When will the next fare war to Europe happen?
I have a feeling we may see another fare war to Europe this Labor Day weekend, or sometime during the next week to get fall travel bookings up.
There have been two limited time discounts in the past month to several countries around Europe with the major carriers of American, Delta and United dropping fares in mid-August and again last week to the $600s. These were short sales of only a day or two.
Spain and Dublin have been the two other primary low fare destinations in the past month with fares from San Francisco dropping to the $600s and even as low as $531 to Dublin for a couple of hours last week with American Airlines.
