The fare war between the major alliances looks like it has moved to South America today with American and United offering low fares around $850 to $865 to Buenos Aires, Argentina from Los Angeles LAX and about $910 to $955 from San Francisco SFO.
Chile and Argentina on Sale
All three alliance leaders, American, Delta and United have $864 fares Los Angeles to Santiago, Chile. Skyteam Alliance member AeroMexico will fly you San Francisco to Santiago for $799. American Airlines is priced from $914.
Those are not cheap fares to Argentina and Chile, however, they are among the lowest fares offered to these cities in the past few months.
The real deal today is there are many other regional airports in South America priced lower with routings through Buenos Aires and other airports.
Ushuaia USH, Argentina – ‘Southernmost city in the World’
Ushuaia, Argentina, the capital of Tierra del Fuego and launch point for Antarctic tours, is one of those trophy travel destinations that is priced for less than flying to Buenos Aires.

Flight Miles: 13,891 miles on Delta-operated flights in economy V class.

November is statistically the month with most hours of sunshine for the year in Ushuaia, Argentina.
The itinerary shown here places you in Buenos Aires for a full 24 hours of transit time from 9am to 9am on the outbound segments to Ushuaia. That is an added bonus in my opinion.
A quick look at Expedia hotel rates for Ushuaia indicates this is the real budget issue to deal with for a trip south. Most hotels are over $200 per night and highest rated hotels in guest reviews are around $250 per night.
OneWorld Alliance member TAM has LAX-USH route at $869 round trip flying Lan Airlines and TAM via Sao Paulo GRU, Brazil. These fares are available for departures from Late September through November 2015.
