Does anyone travel to Egypt anymore?

United Airlines has a low fare from San Francisco to Alexandria, Egypt HBE airport at $750 round trip for travel in November 2015. This is pretty much a one month travel window deal for November departures. Airfare climbs to over $1,500 in December and sits around $2,000 most of winter. Swiss has an $842 fare for SFO-HBE for a few dates in October.

Overnight in Dubai on the way to Egypt

An interesting feature of the United Airlines itinerary is the routing via Washington Dulles IAD and Dubai DXB. You arrive in Dubai at 8:15pm and depart at 11am the following morning. The ticket rules do not allow a stopover, but a short overnight stopover in Dubai is built into the itinerary.

The price for the same United flights to Dubai as your destination are priced over $950 round trip. You get a $200 ticket discount for traveling onward to Egypt.

The 1,811 mile flight segments between Dubai and Alexandria are operated by Flydubai.

  1. A family member sent me a picture from a trip to Egypt last summer. The two of them were in front of a pyramid. You could see the entire pyramid but the number of other tourists in the frame was ZERO. They said Cairo was perfect for a 16-hour layover because you wouldn’t want to spend longer than that!
