American Airlines has a good fare to Quito, Ecuador UIO as low as $526 round trip for travel August to December and dates at $562 from January to May 2016. Prior to this sale, the lowest fare I noticed for AA was around $600 back in May.

Up in the Air
It has been 15 years since I was in Quito for the LatinPass mileage runs in 2000. I remember the city elevation of 9,350 feet in the valley surrounded by higher mountains as a place where the air is thin. Walking around was like being naturally stoned all the time. I followed Quito with a flight to Cusco at 11,000 feet, where I simply felt altitude sickness. Did not stay in either city long enough to acclimate to the elevation.
Cost of handcrafted items were so low in Quito that I did more tourist shopping than any place I have traveled. A vibrant colors painting I bought of a train floating in the clouds surrounded by mountain peaks hangs on my wall at home and sums up my dreamy experience of hanging out in Quito.
