San Francisco to Cape Town is around $1,000 to $1,040 for some departure dates beginning in late October to about December 6, 2015 and then again from January 10 to mid-February. Delta is the lower fare, but availability is not as open as British Airways and flyers earn far less miles without Skymiles elite status. You can fly in May for about the same price with Star Alliance airlines.
In my initial survey of South Africa fares on March 31, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways had SFO-CPT at $957 for September 2015, before the fare rose to $1,300+. Anytime the fare drops to around $1,000 round trip is a good deal for California to Cape Town, especially for OneWorld Alliance carriers offering 100% flight miles with American AAdvantage or British Airways Avios.
British Airways has its low $1,040 fare for some dates all the way into February 2015.
British Airways
San Francisco to Cape Town, South Africa = $1,040.44.
October 26 – November 12, 2015
SFO-LHR-CPT-LHR-SFO = 22,724 flight miles.
American Airlines
San Francisco to Cape Town, South Africa flying British Airways = $1,110.40.
January 11-22, 2016
The ticket price rises $70 to $1,140, if purchased on American Airlines website. Odd that BA flight on the outbound is an Iberia codeshare. If I am reading the rules correctly, the Iberia codeshare earns 80% AAdvantage miles for LHR-CPT segment. AAdvantage miles are earned since codeshare flights on any oneworld carrier operated by another oneworld airline earn miles. Iberia codeshare O economy class earns 100% redeemable AAdvantage miles when the flight is between Spain and US/Mexico, but 80% miles for other regions. Good reason to stick with a purchase on British Airways website. Less money, more miles.
Delta Airlines San Francisco – Cape Town, South Africa
$1,007.00
November 3-17, 2015
Delta Airlines with KLM and Air France offer a slightly lower fare for October and November 2015. Delta flights from SFO-SEA, SEA-AMS connecting to KLM AMS-CPT. Return on Air France CPT-CDG Paris, CDG-SFO.
