Free Breakfast at Marriott for only $20

One of the deals I evaluated this week is Marriott’s S4B rate – Breakfast is on Us at Marriott’s across the west and southwest.

Marriott breakfast rate S4B

Participating Hotels

Enjoy free breakfast when you stay the weekend at participating Marriott hotels across the West and Southwest.

Choose from a wide variety of Marriott hotels located in the hottest destinations, near popular attractions throughout California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona,Texas, Utah, Colorado and Nebraska. Offer includes breakfast at the hotel’s participating restaurant for two adults and two children (age 12 and under). A Friday or Saturday night stay is required and all diners must be registered under the same guestroom.

The offer advertises free breakfast when you stay at a participating Marriott with promotional code S4B.

Free Breakfast at Marriott for only $20

My local Monterey Marriott is one of the participating hotels.

Marriott MRY S4B

Marriott S4B rate = $279

S4B includes breakfast for two adults and children 12 years old and younger for restaurant dining or room service. Additional adults 13 and older are $10 per person extra for breakfast. Room service fees and charges are additional.

Standard rates for the same room types are $20 less per night without breakfast and same cancellation policy of two days before arrival to cancel without penalty.

$20 for breakfast for two in a hotel restaurant is a decent price.

But, shouldn’t the advertisement state breakfast for $20, rather than state free breakfast. This advertisement would not fly in the UK.

Isn’t that like saying, get a “free suite upgrade” on this rate plan, but the rate plan is $100 more than the standard rate?

There is always the option of a discount AAA rate without ‘free’ breakfast included.

Marriott MRY AAA

Marriott Monterey AAA rate is $220.15 for same room category as $279 free breakfast rate.

That $60 savings with AAA rate will likely cover the cost of breakfast at Marriott Monterey with some money left over for lunch. There are also some fine breakfast restaurants on Alvarado Street in downtown Monterey, near the Marriott.

Marriott Breakfast Rate Terms and Conditions
Valid Friday – Sunday through 9/22/15. Limited number of rooms are available for this promotion.  Tax is additional. Offer does not apply to groups of 10 or more rooms. Offer cannot be combined with any other promotions. Blackout dates may apply. Advance reservations required. Other restrictions apply. Rates are per room, per night and based on availability at the time of reservations.

These “free” breakfasts always get me. If I’m going to be paying $20+, I’d rather eat somewhere local and try and get a feel for the area instead of a boring hotel restaurant. If it truly is free, I’ll gladly accept but my money is better spent in other ways.

Why exactly is it “free” breakfast if you’re paying $20?

That’s like saying I’m giving away a free $100 gift card for only $120.
