Alaska Airlines in Monterey
Here are savings I found from Monterey with this Alaska Airlines sale.
My small hometown airport of Monterey has flights connecting to five airports. There are flights to San Francisco and Los Angeles on United Express and American Eagle. United ceased its daily nonstop flight to Denver in mid-2014. US Airways flies to Phoenix and Allegiant flies to Las Vegas. The most recent airline and route is Alaska Airlines nonstop to San Diego.
I found the discount rate for Alaska MRY-SAN, although not quite 25% off when the rate dropped from $90 to $75 each way.
Monterey – Boston Travel with two layover nights in San Diego.
In July I will be traveling to Boston for a WOW Air flight to Copenhagen. I checked Alaska Airlines to see if they would even return a routing for Monterey to Boston. This fare is not valid in July, so I checked dates in April.
You need to go to Advance Search to enter the FUELSAVINGS code for a discount. The FUELSAVINGS discount is shown with a sort of e dollar symbol.
The discount rate of $184 for a Tuesday flight is $39 off the $223 regular fare for a 17.5% discount.
The results surprised me and MRY-BOS is a routing I will keep in mind for a potential future trip with long overnight layovers in San Diego.
There is only one Monterey – San Diego flight daily on Alaska Airlines and one San Diego – Boston flight daily. The deal is I can fly from Monterey at 8:00am and be in San Diego at 9:19am. The flight to Boston leaves at 8:45 am the following day meaning a full day and night with 23 hours in San Diego. That is a deal breaker for some travelers. I look at this routing as an opportunity to visit two cities on one ticket.
The return also requires an overnight with nearly a full day in San Diego.
Alaska 769 Depart BOS 6:30pm Arrive SAN 9:57pm.
Alaska 2436 Depart following day SAN 6:15pm Arrive MRY 7:42pm.
This schedule offers a chance for a night and all day to hang out in San Diego before continuing on to Monterey.
$357 Alaska Airlines ticket price is $17 more than United or American at $340 to fly via SFO or LAX on an 8 hour itinerary.
Building in a nearly 24 hour transit stop is a common strategy for international travel itineraries. In 2013. I flew on an American Airlines award ticket from Monterey to Berlin with a day trip in Zurich on the outbound and overnights with 20 to 23 hours in Oslo, Norway; Helsinki, Finland; London, UK and an overnight in Chicago.
Finding these opportunities is much tougher in the USA. One day in San Diego when flying between Monterey and Boston on Alaska Airlines is an interesting routing.
