My opinion on weak SPG More for You Double and Triple Points promotion Sep 15 to Dec 15, 2014

SPG More For You double and triple points promotion for stays of two or more nights from September 15 to December 15, 2014 is the new promotion announced today. SPG More for You promotion registration is required by October 31.

SPG More For You

Earn double points (total 4 points/$1) for weekdays and triple points (total 6 points/$1) for weekends. The definition of weekends depends on what region of the world you are staying.

Weekends: Friday or Saturday night in your stay. Middle East region weekend is a Thursday or Friday in your stay. If one of the nights in your stay of two nights or more includes one weekend night, then you earn triple points.

Warning: Award nights or Cash & Points nights combined with two or more consecutive paid nights makes the entire stay ineligible for double or triple points.

If part of my stay was reserved using a Free Night Award or SPG Cash & Points, will my stay qualify?

No, Free Night Awards and Cash & Points do not count as qualifying stays for this promotion. Even if part of the stay is reserved using an Award and part is paid, the member will not receive bonus Starpoints for any part of the stay.

Update Sep 8: Starwood Lurker confirms my query on FlyerTalk that if you have award nights or Cash& Points nights in the same stay with two or more consecutive paid nights, then the stay is ineligible for promotion bonus points.

Not if they are combined with a Cash & Points or Free Night Award booking. They would need to be booked and credited as separate stays/nights and policy states that consecutive nights are supposed to be credited as one stay for whatever number of consecutive nights are booked.

Back to original post with first sentence strike out since Starwood Lurker clarified the meaning.  This makes absolutely no sense to me, unless they simply mean one night as Cash & Points and one night as a paid stay is ineligible. But that is not how this FAQ reads. I read this as meaning if I book a Thursday night using SPG Cash & Points and remain at the same hotel on paid nights for Friday and Saturday, then the entire stay is ineligible for bonus points. This is a first that I recall for SPG. This FAQ point also does not comply with the SPG program terms and conditions which define eligible stays. Looks like they borrowed that SPG More For You FAQ clause from Hilton HHonors. when there is no similar clause in SPG T&C.

If at least one night of the Member’s stay is consumed with the use of HHonors Rewards Points, the entire stay is considered a “Reward Stay” and no HHonors Points may be earned.

My Opinion on Weak SPG More For You Promotion

The two nights requirement to earn bonus points combined with another long list of hotels opting out makes this a relatively weak promotion bonus for me and many SPG members. For example, 21 of 71 California hotels (30%) are nonparticipating hotels and award nights combined with an otherwise eligible paid stay invalidates the promotion bonus points.

SPG More for You promotion looks like a dud offer for many Starwood hotel stays meaning less Starwood Hotel stays for me this season. I give this SPG promotion 3 stars out of 5. The deal is a good bonus if you meet the stay requirements at an eligible hotel, however, the list of nonparticipating hotels and 2-night stay requirement along with an award night combined with an otherwise eligible bonus points stay invalidating the bonus points makes me yawn at the offer. The SPG Triple Crave dining bonus for triple points is more interesting and has more participating hotels.

I’d rather sign up my wife and family for the IHG 2 free nights offer and get some real value for my hotel stays this end of year season.

  • Bill September 8, 2014

I am bummed that all of the SF area SPG hotels have opted out–but I’m not surprised. California hotels still see plenty of business and have high rates to show for it for the promotion period, so they seem to often opt out for fall promotions, but I can’t recall seeing so many opt out in previous years.

  • Ric Garrido September 8, 2014

The fact that these hotels have high rates seems all the more reason to participate in the SPG promotions.

It is not like all the hotels are sold out every night.

Why not encourage SPG members to pay high rates and earn bonuses rather than driving members to another hotel chain for a bonus offer?
