Analysis

American AAdvantage economy class off-peak saver awards to Europe are only 20,000 miles one-way between USA and Europe from October 15 to May 15. Intra-Europe partner airline flights are 10,000 miles in economy for a one-way award. 20,000 Starpoints will take you to just about any place in Europe with 30,000 miles. Considering high airfares in 2014, there can be good value in transferring Starpoints to miles if you need to get to some expensive destination.

American Airlines economy class off-peak saver awards to Central America and northern South America (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela) are 15,000 miles for one way travel September 7 – November 14, 2014. One 20,000 Starpoints transfer will be sufficient miles for a roundtrip American Airlines ticket from the USA to Central America or northern South America.

Personally, Ivalue my Starpoints too highly to transfer to airline miles. I transferred 20,000 Starpoints into 25,000 British Airways miles once back in 2003 when I needed quick miles for First Class tickets from the USA to Australia within days of the award rate rising from 150,000 miles to 420,000 miles.

That being said, you may find great value in this deal if you need to be somewhere and you have more need to save cash than Starpoints.
