Marriott hits 4,000 hotels with new Marriott Marquis Washington D.C.

Marriott International has become a member of the 4,000 hotels club in the hotel industry with its latest hotel opening of Marriott Marquis Washington, D.C. Marriott International joins InterContinental Hotels Group and Hilton Worldwide as hotel chains with primarily upper midscale to luxury brands and more than 4,000 hotels globally. Wyndham (7,500+) and Choice (6,300+) are larger hotel chains, but most hotels in these brands are upper midscale and lower hotel market segments.

Accor Hotels, based in France, is another large global chain that used to have over 4,000 hotels before selling Motel 6 brand, however, the hotel loyalty program only covers about 2,700 hotels globally with nearly 1,000 hotels in its economy/budget sector not participating in Le Club Accor Hotels loyalty program.

Marriott Marquis Washington D.C.

The $520-million Marriott Marquis Washington D.C. is now the largest hotel in Washington D.C. at 1,175 rooms including 49 suites. The location is at the D.C. Convention Center. This is the fifth Marriott Marquis property. The others are located in Atlanta, New York, San Diego and San Francisco.

Sort of odd to see the hotel photos on the D.C. website are all computer generated images. Time to get a photographer out to the hotel for real photos.

Marriott Rewards category 6.

This is especially impressive given that there is a Renaissance down the street that is not small either (800+ rooms). Clearly Marriott felt it was a good idea to double down on the Convention Center/Mt. Vernon Square area.
