Easter weekend makes for some good discount rates at hotels catering to business travelers. There are two weeks left to earn Marriott Rewards MegaBonus for two free nights after four hotel stays. I have only earned one of my free nights so far. Marriott eBreaks show some low hotel rates for this weekend.
In contrast to SPG Hot Escapes that posts low teaser rates for hotels that need to be checked by calendar to see if there are really a choice of dates with a discount or Hyatt Hotels that offers frequent 48-hour discount rates, but does not bother to share a list of participating hotels, Marriott eBreaks are easy to find, offered on fixed dates and best of all, tend to allow cancellation with no penalty up to day of arrival. Hyatt and SPG are prepaid, nonrefundable rate discounts.

Ooh, Ukiah
Checking California hotels reveals Fairfield Inn Ukiah at $79. That rate has me thinking about a trip north to Mendocino County.

The Stornetta Lands north of Point Arena were declared a National Monument by President Obama’s proclamation last month. Mendocino County has been in California news a lot.
I lived ten years in Humboldt County, 400 miles north of Monterey. I made dozens of road trips along the Redwood Highway (Highway 101) through the mountain vistas of redwood forests as far as the eyes can see. Mendocino County is remote and inspirational. I have not been in Mendocino County since I moved back to Monterey in 2001.

Interesting that I just checked a Mendocino County tourism CD on my desk and there are no photo images of redwood forest covered mountains. There is only this one redwood trees photo. Good reason to make a weekend road trip to get the photos I want to share.
All the VisitMendocino.com photos are the Mendocino coast where the old growth redwood trees were logged in the 19th century and never allowed to grow back. In all fairness, the coast is where most of the tourism dollars are spent in Mendocino County.

Hard to believe that after an 800-mile road trip on a bus two weeks ago that I want to jump in my car for another 600 to 700 mile trip.
Might be just day dreams this morning or thinking about the 1973 Doobie Brothers song, Ukiah (YouTube link).
People rushin’ everywhere
If they’d only slow down once they might find something there
Green trees and timber lands, people workin’ with their hands
For sure a different way to live
Gonna keep my cabin at hand, retreat and live off the land
All around Ukiah, whoaUkiah, Doobie Brothers
Reminds me that my wife and I had our first hotel stay together in 1982 in Ukiah, a month before I moved from Monterey to Arcata, California to attend Humboldt State University. That 1982 hotel was a dive. Ukiah was less inspirational than I had imagined, although, all around Ukiah is mountain forest beauty.
Fairfield Inn Ukiah would be an upscale stay at probably double the price we paid to sleep in Ukiah in 1982.
