Check out these Loyalty Traveler posts for a tutorial on using ITA Flight matrix.

United Newark-Paris $611 round trip in spring and fall using ITA Software to find it (March 25, 2014)

LAX to Scandinavia for $500, then hopscotch flights around Europe (March 26, 2014)

Visiting more of Europe than solely your ticket destination with transit stops (March 21, 2014)

LAX-Paris or LAX-AMS $660 United with Stockholm or Copenhagen stopover spring and fall travel (March 25, 2014)

Thank you Norwegian. Cut $500 off airfare to Athens for TBEX Europe 14 (March 26, 2014)

There is no telling how long these fares will be around. This is a fare war by Skyteam and Star Alliance against new startup Norwegian Airlines operating in JFK, FLL, LAX and OAK Oakland, California with low fares to Europe.

LAX has some of the best deals for travel to Europe before May 15 and from late August through the rest of 2014. In addition to the Skyteam and Star Alliance options, Aeroflot is offering some good fares from LAX via Moscow to a variety of places all over Europe for $650 to $800 and for some cities the Aeroflot fares are $500 less than prevailing fares.

There was a website in the Netherlands many years ago that had short sayings. One I remember well and adapted over the years is

School interferes with seeing the world.

Then I adapted it to “Work interferes with seeing the world.”

In recent years I adapted it again to “Family interferes with seeing the world.”

Responsibilities interfere with seeing the world. That is a truism for many travelers who don’t want to chuck everything for a life of travel.
