High value of Choice Privileges points in Paris and Venice

Park Hyatt Paris Vendome rates start at $958 per night for one week in October with prepaid, nonrefundable rates and rise to over $1,108 per night for a rate that can be cancelled without penalty one day prior to arrival.  Or you can redeem 22,000 Hyatt Gold Passport points per night; 154,000 points for seven nights.

Starwood Hotels Prince de Galles, Paris is $818 per night on a prepaid, nonrefundable rate or $1,082 flexible rate with day before arrival no penalty cancellation for 7 nights October 15-22. Or shed 180,000 Starpoints from your whale-sized Starwood Preferred Guest account.

A luxury hotel room is a nice amenity for a week’s stay in Paris. But unless you are pulling in some big six-figure income, working as a fashion model or Wall Street banker, chances are you can’t afford to stay in Paris in a luxury hotel for a week without busting your bank account or loyalty programs account if you are a middle class income traveler. Luxury is seldom a necessity when it comes to travel accommodations.

The Value of Choice Privileges points in Paris

Paris is a dream destination for many travelers. Hotel rates in Paris are among the highest in the world and the occupancy rate has been among the highest for European hotels over the past year.

A closer look at the availability of Choice Privileges widespread availability of reward nights in Europe at 8,000 points per night through November 30, 2013 reveals savings as high as $300 per night for hotels in Paris over the next couple of months.

This post looks at some specific hotels for 7-night extended stays using 56,000 Choice Privileges points.  A couple can buy 44,000 Choice Privileges points this week for $440 if you need points. The current Choice Privileges two stays promotion earns 8,000 points.

The rate savings at three hotels are displayed in this post comparing the published rate to the reward nights option for hotels available over 7 nights using Choice Privileges points in Paris, France and Venice, Italy.

Is your objective to tour Paris for a week and sleep in a bed at night with free breakfast to start your day and complimentary internet. Or would you prefer to stay at a luxury hotel in Paris for one or two nights on points?

The opportunity to buy hotel points in loyalty programs at discount rates is one to consider when these limited time offers become available. Personally, I seldom book Choice Hotels for my travels to urban centers. Choice Hotels are my rural road trip brand. The regular occurrence of Choice brand hotels in Europe at 8,000 points per night is what I find most attractive about Choice Privileges.

Europe is a bargain right now in many cities where hotel rates are typically unaffordable to the vast majority of travelers. There is no need to downgrade your lifestyle to hostel living or couch surfing to spend a week in one of the great cities of Europe.

Thinking beyond the high end hotels in Starwood, Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt and InterContinental opens up the opportunity to book comfortable hotels at bargain rates if you expand your outlook to midscale chain hotels available for points in programs like Choice Privileges, Best Western Rewards and Wyndham Rewards. These are global hotel chains where the best values are often found outside the USA.

Excellent article, Ric. Most of the time when I travel, I just want to stay in a decent hotel to crash in. I haven’t stayed in a Clarion before, but I have stayed in Quality Inn and my experiences with QIs were o.k. and nothing to complain about.

When is the right time to visit France (Paris) and Italy or Europe in general to avail these rates that you are describing here?

Again an excellent article for middle class customers.

    Regards,
    Ben.

Excellent work Ric. I love this type of analysis for the middle class traveler, without the nonsense about spending $40,000 on a credit card or how great the soap smells. I would also add that flight availability at the Saver level is fairly plentiful in Economy based on the checks i did with UA. Taxes run a bit on the high side, starting at $80 each way, so always best to compare the revenue fares on economy awards.

Interesting, Choice would never have occurred to me. But I agree this is great value.

  • Alan September 18, 2013

Club Carlson can be pretty good too – 50k poi is their top redemption rate which can mean significant value per point on a redemption.

  • ABC September 18, 2013

In addition to staying there and buying points, what’s the 3rd best way to earn points with this program?

  • Betsy September 18, 2013

Hi Ric – Great post. We’re Platinum with Choice and use the Barclay’s Choice Visa to add points on day to day spending. We’ll be in Paris in January; too early to book with points, but I’d imagine the value would be similar. We’ll keep it on our radar. Thanks.

  • Maggie September 18, 2013

This is a really nice deal. Can I buy 20,000 points and a friend gift me 2000 points?

  • Tara @ Miles To The Wild September 18, 2013

I have Choice properties on my radar for next year’s Med cruise. We need a pre-cruise in Venice and the Choice Diana looks good. Just frustrating to have to wait until 2 months pre-trip to book it.

  • Ric Garrido September 19, 2013

@Maggie – No. A member can only receive 20,000 points in a calendar year whether purchased for self or gifted.

  • tommyx September 19, 2013

Last year I stayed at the Clarion Collection Hotel Opera Pavilion at that great redemption of 8,000 points per night. I’ve been visiting Paris for 25 years and this was, by far, the best ‘choice’ of accommodation for the price.

  • Jack September 20, 2013

I stayed in a Choice Hotel once by an airport last year when a flight was canceled and I was impressed with the value. They weren’t on my radar before because most of the travel blogs focus on the high end market segment. Thanks for the information about an often ignored chain of value hotels.

  • Jamie September 21, 2013

I’ve got to chime in here too and say what a useful post this is. I don’t remember ever staying at a Choice hotel, even on road trips, but I have had some very nice stays at Best Western hotels. They are both off my radar, and I don’t understand their loyalty programs at all.
I like luxury accommodation, but we also like to travel as much as possible. So, the points run out pretty quickly if you’re staying in upscale hotels all the time.

It’s true that point values for Choice hotels are unbeatable in Europe. The problem with them is how unpredictable they are and how hard it is to plan ahead. But if you can plan your trip on a short notice, they are insanely good. Also great value in Rome and Tokyo.

  • Nick @ PFDigest September 23, 2013

Great stuff! The Choice Hotels program has always been off the radar for me and I had no idea there were such great deals to be had.

I stayed at the Clarion Collection Hotel Etoile Saint Honore, Paris. Nice hotel. Great staff.

I cashed in my rewards points and it was worth the stay. It’s the next street over from the Champ Elysees.

Great valued and LOTs of money saved!

  • Justin November 3, 2013

    Ben,

I went in Mid October. Weather was a bit chilly and in the 50’s. Week before was in the 60s and the following week was in the 60s.

I’d say the BEST TIME to go is Early October. Peak tourist season is over so the lines are shorter, rates are still high, and all is open.

Even in Mid October, the Clarion Collection Hotel Etoile Saint Honore, Paris was still 200 EU a night.

  • Ben November 3, 2013

    Thanks, Justin. That’s really helpful.
