SPG Sep 1-Dec 15, 2013 Double Points and 2,500 points every 5 nights

Starwood Preferred Guest has announced its primary end-of-year promotion for double points and 2,500 bonus points every 5 nights, up to 10,000 bonus points after 20 nights for stays from September 1 through December 15, 2013.

Registration: Members must register online at by October 31, 2013, midnight Eastern Time (ET).

Registration page is not yet open. SPG members can request text messages for a reminder when registration opens.

The primary drawback of this promotion are the large number of hotels opting out (150 hotels), particularly in the U.S. The hotel list of nonparticipating hotels follows my analysis.

Promotion Analysis

Double Starpoints means 2 extra Starpoints per dollar in spend. This means the normal base rate of 2 points per dollar will be 4 points per dollar. Elite bonus points are earned separately and not doubled.

SPG is one of the lowest earning hotel loyalty programs at the base points level. $100 in hotel spend earns 200 base points normally and will earn 400 Starpoints during this promotion at eligible hotels.

The better earning portion of this offer is the 2,500 bonus points after 5 nights. Assuming five nights at $100 per night means:

$500 in Starwood Hotel spend earns:

  • 1,000 base points
  • 1,000 bonus points (Double points)
  • 2,500 bonus points (every 5 nights)
  • plus applicable elite bonus points

At least 4,500 Starpoints on $500 in hotel spend. SPG Gold elite members earn at least 5,000 points after 5 nights at $100 per night hotels.

4,500 to 5,000 points is sufficient for a free night at a Category 2 hotel (3,000 on Friday-Saturday weekend nights; 4,000 on Sunday-Thursday weekday nights).

Cash & Points at SPG category 4 hotels is 5,000 points + $70 per night. I find this is often a $200+ hotel rate savings at some properties.

This looks like a good promotion for SPG members as long as you reach 5 nights during the promotion period to earn the 2,500 bonus points component. This is also a good bonus for members making extra hotel stays to reach elite membership levels with SPG by year end 2013.
