Loyalty Traveler Analysis

10,000 bonus points is worth at least $280 based on the current 20% discount for buying Starpoints through August 31.

Basically I look at this promotion as being a $280 future rebate on hotel stays at these two hotels.

In addition, the rates are as low as $119 for one night at these resorts in August 2012. This is a great deal for someone in the Phoenix area to stay one night each at both resorts and earn this bonus.

Westin Kierland Resort – Friday, August 10 = $159.79

image

Sheraton Wild Horse Pass – Saturday, August 11 = $133.28

Total spend for two stays = $293.07.

Starpoints earned = 10,000 bonus points + 476 base points + elite bonus points + SPG Choice bonus points.

Bottom line is this deal earns enough points to make these two stays essentially a buy one get one free. 10,000 Starpoints is sufficient for two Cash & Points nights at category 4 and 5 hotels that will likely save $300 to $400.

Keep this offer in mind if you are visiting Phoenix in the near future for a great hotel deal. Rates climb as the weather moves into the cooler months nearer December making this far less lucrative based on the cost of two nights at these Starwood Resorts.

These are two nice resorts for family fun with great pools and activities.

Loyalty Traveler stay at Westin Kierland Resort May 2008. I thought I had written a review of Westin Kierland Resort, but I can’t locate one.

In short, I loved the place. Any place where I can swim in a pool with colored underwater lights at 3am is cool with me.

With SPG do you have complete the stays to get the bonus, or a no show with paid penalty will qualify?

Also do you know if SPG “Friends and Family” rates qualify for this promo with these two hotels?

  • Ric Garrido July 30, 2012

Friends & family rates are not eligible rates for promotion credit with SPG.

  • Martin July 30, 2012

    Hi Ric,
    just another small question:
Do you already know when the next sweepstakes are planned … to win 10.000 Starpoints? 😀
    Bye, Martin

  • Ric Garrido July 30, 2012

@Martin – Stay tuned…about 10 days from now I’ll post another SPG Amex Stars sweepstakes opportunity for free Starpoints through Loyalty Traveler blog.

  • laurent July 30, 2012

Do you know if http://www.beatthetimer.com rates are eligible? Or any of the special SPG rates besides the “Family and Friends” rate are eligible?

  • Flip July 31, 2012

Am I reading this correctly, you have to stay at both hotels?

  • Ric Garrido July 31, 2012

@laurent – These SPG rates have to be booked using the 10YEAR booking code to get the 10,000 bonus points.

You can’t use other rate codes.

@Flip – Yes. You need a stay at both hotels for the 10,000 bonus points. A 1-night stay at each hotel counts.

@Jason and @Mike – Starwood Hotels are very good about checking ID when a person checks into the hotel. On the rare occasion when I check into a hotel and the desk clerk does not check my ID, I point out that they need to check ID when a person checks in since I know they do not know me and I don’t want another person checking in for my room.

  • worldtraveller2 July 31, 2012

can you get 5000,if you only book one of these hotels for one night? or is it required to book both to get the full 10,000?

  • worldtraveller2 July 31, 2012

never mind, I reread the rules!

  • David K August 13, 2012

Do these bookings need to be for cash, or can we make an award booking or cash+points booking and have it count towards the stay requirement at each of the two hotels?

  • Ric Garrido August 14, 2012

@David K. – Hotel bookings need to be paid rates using 10YEAR booking code.

Starwood Preferred Guest and almost any promotion from any hotel chain requires paid rates for the loyalty member to earn promotion bonuses.

Club Carlson is unique in counting Points + Cash rates as paid rates for promotions. Hilton, IHG Priority Club and SPG do not count Cash & Points stays for promotion credits.

SPG, Choice and Hilton count award stays including Cash & Points stays for annual elite qualification nights and/or stays, but that is entirely different from counting award stays for bonus points promotion credit.
